ENGLAND — Country Continues Tradition: Queens Royal Swan Marker David Barber checks out a cygnet near Staines as the ancient tradition of counting swans along the River Thames begins on Monday. The tradition known as Swan Upping dates back to the 12th century when the ownership of all unmarked mute swans in open water in Britain was claimed by the monarchy in order to ensure a ready supply for feasts.

WASHINGTON — Robotics Teams Compete: Afghanistan’s FIRST Global Challenge team members Lida Azizi, left, and Fatemah Qaderyan meet with reporters following the opening ceremony in Washington on Sunday. Twice rejected for U.S. visas, the all-girls robotics team arrived on Saturday and will compete against entrants from more than 150 countries in the three-day high school competition.
