ON THIS DAY IN 1950, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Police Reinforced in Bookie Drive.”

The article focused on the increase of plain-clothes cops around the borough in an effort to drive bookies out of business.

“The bookies are up in arms at this cavalier treatment on the part of men who previously were recipients of ‘ice,’ or protection. Many bookmakers are defying the cops and staying in business, without, however, paying protection for their right to make a book,” the Eagle reported.

About 800 miles into their flight to tiny Howland Island, radio contact was lost with her craft.
