The Rundown
 

~ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER PIER 6 UPDATE: It looks like Brooklyn Bridge Park could get mighty noisy very soon. On Thursday, New York State Supreme Court Justice Lucy Billings ruled that construction can commence on two controversial towers at Pier 6. Billings declined to issue a temporary restraining order, sought on an emergency basis by the Brooklyn Heights Association. Trucks have already begun bringing in material, but Billings warned the developers to proceed “at their [own] peril.” Final arguments on the case will be heard August 4. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle) 
 

~PARTY AND PEDAL: A parade of lights of all shapes, sizes and colors will whirl and whizz down the borough’s waterfront tomorrow. The radiant procession is part of the second annual Brooklyn Bike Rave, a unique event where hundreds of extravagantly dressed cyclists party and pedal en masse down a 7-mile route spanning Greenpoint, Williamsburg, DUMBO, the Navy Yard and Brooklyn Bridge Park. “All of our events are a way to engage the public in our mission work,” said Brooklyn Greenway InitiativeCo-Founder and Executive Director Brian McCormick. “We thought this would be a unique opportunity to raise the visibility, the visibility because it’s a mobile Fourth of July on wheels where everyone is their own fireworks. It’s a mass expression of individuality and creativity.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
 
~LIRR GETS SOME HELP: Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Wednesday a $5.6 billion infrastructure plan, encompassing 100 capital projects, to upgrade and transform LIRR. For Brooklyn, this means renovation of the Jamaica terminal, which handles virtually all LIRR traffic, but hasn’t been upgraded for more than 100 years. The renovation will improve service to Brooklyn stations like Atlantic Terminal, Nostrand Avenue and East New York. “We’re designing future tracks and signal reconfiguration, higher speeds, switches and new signals, new platforms, so Jamaica can be a real hub that can bring people, not just to Penn, but also downtown and also to Brooklyn,” Cuomo said. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
 
~NOT YOUR AVERAGE CUP OF JOE: A Starbucks is slated to open its first location in Bed-Stuy next spring, and it’s keeping people up at night. The new outpost is part of a project by the coffee company to open stores and create jobs in underserved communities. But residents of the quickly-gentrifying ’hood worry about competition and say the shop will be “awful” for local businesses. On top of that, a study by GFI Realty Services shows that large national brands like Starbucks are causing retail rents to surge in popular areas of Brooklyn like Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Boerum Hill andDowntown Brooklyn. (via Commercial Observer, NYDN and Real Estate Weekly)
 
~WHERE BROOKLYN AT?: Two decades ago, immortalized rapper Biggie Smalls was fatally shot in L.A. Now in 2017, Brooklyn has honored him left and right. And with the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival just concluding, there couldn’t be a better time. A two-story Bed-Stuy mural of the rapper will stay after there was backlash against a landlord wanting to remove it. Meanwhile,Bed-Stuy kids will get to grow up with Notorious B.I.G., as councilmemberRobert Cornegy will name a basketball court after the icon. And in a love of all things Brooklyn, the Nets honored Biggie earlier this year at Barclays Center for the 20th anniversary of his death.
