ON THIS DAY IN 1952, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “‘Human Fly,’ 16, Nabbed with Stolen Weapons.”

The article focused on a young Bushwick burglar who swung from building to building during his break-ins.

“Watching from a high vantage point of the L train, the witness then saw the boy, he said, enter a four-story building by breaking a window on the third floor. From a rope attached to the chimney of this structure, the youth let himself down to the roof of the building that was his goal,” the Eagle reported.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1899. The American author made his name with such works as “The Sun Also Rises,” “A Farewell to Arms,” “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Old Man and the Sea.” He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1954 and wrote little thereafter. Hemingway shot himself in 1961 in Idaho after having been seriously ill for some time.

BATTLE OF BULL RUN OCCURRED ON THIS DAY IN 1861. Union Gen. Irvin McDowell was defeated by Confederate troops led by Gen. Joseph E. Johnston at the first Battle of Bull Run in Virginia. It was the first major engagement of the Civil War, and it was during this battle that Confederate Gen. T.J. Jackson won the nickname “Stonewall.” In the second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862, Union Gen. John Pope was badly defeated by Gen. Robert E. Lee.

JOHNNY EVERS WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1881. The Baseball Hall of Fame second baseman was a member of the Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance double-play combination for the Chicago Cubs, which first took the field in September 1902. Evers was inducted into the Hall of Fame (with Tinker and Chance) in 1946. He died in New York in 1947.

THE FIRST DOCUMENTED ROBOT-RELATED DEATH OCCURRED ON THIS DAY IN 1984. The first reported killing of a human by a robot occurred in Missouri, where a robot turned and caught a 34-year-old worker between it and a safety bar, crushing him. He died of the injuries a week later.
