ON THIS DAY IN 1953, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Flood Calls Swamp Police.”

The article focused on the sudden end of a long drought and how flooding caused headaches for many in Brooklyn.

“Police precincts all over Brooklyn were flooded with calls reporting emergencies stemming from today’s sudden ending of a long drought — and at least one station house was flooded literally. The 63rd Precinct on Brooklyn Avenue reported 4-5 inches of water flooding the building, backing up sewers and menacing police records and the building’s oil burner,” the Eagle reported.

SAMUEL MAVERICK WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1803. The rancher, land baron and politician spent most of his life in Texas. He was a key figure in the battle for Texas independence from Mexico. As a rancher, Maverick refused to brand his calves, claiming humanitarian reasons, but others saw that habit as a wily way to increase his herd by “adopting” unmarked cattle. Nevertheless, an unbranded or stray calf was remarked as being “Maverick’s,” and his last name became a synonym for a stubborn individual. Maverick died in 1870 in Texas, where he served as mayor twice.

RAYMOND CHANDLER WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1888. The American master of postwar, hard-boiled crime fiction didn’t begin writing until he lost his management job at an oil company in 1933. After publishing short stories in Black Mask and other crime magazines, Chandler published his first novel, “The Big Sleep,” in 1939 to popular and critical acclaim. This and subsequent novels featured Philip Marlowe, a Los Angeles private eye who liked “liquor and women and chess and a few other things.” Chandler also authored or coauthored three Hollywood screenplays, including the searing “Double Indemnity.” Chandler died in California in 1959.
