THE LEDE: Good morning, Brooklyn! Amtrak has some serious competition. There’s no end in site for the striking Charter/Spectrum workers. Hawaii is preparing for a North Korean attack. Michael Phelps races against a great white shark, and the Japanese aren’t having kids. Plus, head on over to Staff Picks to find out if it’s better to shower in the morning or at night. Have a great week!

The Rundown

~LET’S TRY THIS AGAIN: Welcome to the Gingerbread House. It’s the most famous home in Bay Ridge, yet no one is willing to pay its whopping asking price. The century-old landmarked mansion looks like a super-sized stone cottage from a fairy tale and has been on the market several times in the past six-plus years for as high as $10.999 million. One real estate salesperson even tried using a drone to show off the property, but no one bit. Well, after countless tries and after changing brokers, the price of the house has now been reduced by $2 million. It’s now for sale at a cool $9 million. Any takers? (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and The Real Deal)

~ALL ABOARD, HYPER-SPEED TO D.C.: Move over Amtrak! Soon it could be possible to travel from New York to Washington D.C. in the time of an MTA train delay. Tech Entrepreneur Elon Musk tweeted that he received spoken government approval for The Boring Company to build a high-speed underground intercity “Hyperloop” that would connect the two cities in 29 minutes. The company’s goal is to connect cities across the country in a revolutionary way. “Still a lot of work needed to receive formal approval, but am optimistic that will occur rapidly,” Musk tweeted. New Yorkers eager to use the Hyperloop will have to make it through a few more Summers of Hell before trying it out. (via New York Post)

~THE INFLATABLE RAT LINGERS: Frustration mounts as the strike goes on for Time-Warner cable workers in Sunset Park. After almost five months, there appears to be no end in sight as the workers and Charter/Spectrum still can’t come to terms on a new contract. We have updates from both sides in the dispute along with exclusive comments from Charter/Spectrum, Local Union 3, Public Advocate Letitia James, Councilmember Vincent Gentile and other notable players. And here’s the backstory behind how “Scabby the Rat” became the symbol for New York City’s unions. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and 6sqft)

~TRAIN DERAILMENT AHEAD, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE: Another day, another derailment on the subway. In the second train derailment in less than a month, a Q train came off the rails in Brighton Beach, but luckily no passengers were hurt. Officials were not immediately sure of the cause, but it’s certain trash on the tracks didn’t spark this one. The Summer of Hell brought flames to the 145th Street tracks recently, and MTA chairman Joe Lhota pointed blame at the commuters for littering and he’s considering a food ban in the subway. Councilmember Melissa Mark-Viverito weighed in, “Instead of wasting time pointing fingers and arguing over who controls the MTA, we should be focused on finding solutions to these urgent transit issues.” Plus, here’s why the subway system — with its 1.8 billion annual ridership — is in shambles(via NBC News, AP via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and amNew York)
