ON THIS DAY IN 1940, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Boro Approach to Tunnel to Be Finished by Oct. 1”

The article focused on updates about the construction of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel.

“Demolition of structures on the site of the tunnel plaza started recently. The tunnel itself, it is expected, will have its opening in 1944. The tunnel approach will connect with the Belt Parkway at Owl’s Head Park,” the Eagle reported.

AMELIA EARHART WAS BORN IN 1897. The American pilot went missing during her flight from New Guinea to Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean in July 1937. Earhart was the first woman to cross the Atlantic solo, the second person to cross the Atlantic solo and first person to fly solo across the Pacific from Hawaii to California.

ALEXANDRE DUMAS WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1802. The French playwright and novelist is said to have written more than 300 volumes, including “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “The Three Musketeers.” Dumas died in France in 1870.

SIMON BOLIVAR WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1783. The Venezuelan liberator is known for his leading role in the establishment of Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Panama, independent of Spanish rule. Bolivar died in 1830 in Colombia.
