ON THIS DAY IN 1906, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a front-page article titled “Watchful Eye Kept on Meat for the Navy.”

The article focused on the poor quality of meat served to Navy men about the Hancock.

“Like their fellow tars on the receiving ship, the bluejackets of the armored cruiser publicly charge that much of the meat delivered to Colorado, now lying in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, is of such a quality that it has to be rejected, while some meat that finds its way into the messroom is so bad that the sailors are unable to eat it,” the Eagle reported.
