THE LEDE: Good morning and happy Friday! Have some free time this weekend? Make your way to the newly opened section of Brooklyn Bridge Park. Crime in Brooklyn is poised to dip to a record low in 2017, and the headless torso found in Red Hook may have been identified. One man sticks up for the Kosciuszko Bridge, and recounts a story of “the brash and dirty old soul of New York.” The NYT drops its list of “9 Young New Yorkers Poised for Creative Genius,” and some of them may be your neighbors. Then, she’s not on the list of 9, but one Bushwick woman grabs a roll of toilet paper and takes D.I.Y. culture to a whole new level. Staff Picks today includes a piece on what happens to guns after they’re seized, and the science behind subway napping. We’ll see you again on Monday!

~THERE’S EVEN MORE OF BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK TO LOVE:Yesterday, officials cut the ribbon to open 3.4 new acres of lawns, a shaded picnic grove and meandering paths around a grassy, sound-blocking berm, nestled in the uplands just east of the Picnic Peninsula at Pier 5…bringing the park’s construction to more than 80 percent complete. “Parks and recreational spaces are places for serenity and healing, and we should expand access to them for all Brooklynites,” said Brooklyn BP Eric Adams“I commend Brooklyn Bridge Park for its commitment to providing much-needed green space along the Brooklyn Waterfront with this new additional acreage.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~CRIME IN BROOKLYN ON TRACK TO HIT RECORD LOW IN 2017: Crime has been trending down in Brooklyn consistently since its height in the early ’90s and that trend has so far continued in 2017 as the borough continues to produce record-low crime numbers. Last year was the safest year in Brooklyn since officials began keeping crime statistics, but so far 2017 has had significantly reduced numbers of shooting incidents, shooting victims and homicides, plus decreases in many other categories. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~RED HOOK’S HEADLESS TORSO MAY BELONG TO MISSING N.J. WOMAN: The NYPD is investigating whether a woman’s butchered and decomposed torso that was found floating off the shoreline of Red Hook on June 27 belongs to a 31-year-old woman who has been missing since June 25. A couple walking their dog initially spotted the body floating in the vicinity ofGowanus Bay and Buttermilk Channel, police sources said. Although police officers have not officially identified the woman, sources believe that the torso belongs to Jennifer Londono, a 31-year-old bar manager from Englewood, N.J. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~“A CRI DE COEUR FOR AN UNLOVED BRIDGE”: Not too many people are crying for the Kosciuszko Bridge, which is slated to be demolished later this month. But, one man recounts a story that begins with a tight merge taken personally, and ends in “the hippiest moment of [his] life”…and it all takes place on the old bridge, which he argues is “one of the dwindling number of places where the brash and dirty old soul of New York still resides.” (via the NYT)

~GUESS WHERE 4 OUT OF THE “9 YOUNG NEW YORKERS POISED FOR CREATIVE GENIUS” LIVE: From the executive chef of Mission Chinese to a full-time Snapchat filmmaker, the NYT identified nine young artists, models, designers and creators across the city who are taking their field by storm. They’re all transplants from other cities…and now nearly half of them live in Brooklyn. (via the NYT)

~TAKING D.I.Y. CULTURE TO A NEW LEVEL: If you’ve ever attended a bridal shower and played the game in which you make a wedding dress out of toilet paper, you may have some level of appreciation for one Bushwickwoman’s creation. Van Tran is a finalist (and the defending champion) in a quirky competition to make a wedding dress out of toilet paper, and the stakes are high. The winner will receive $10,000 and a spot in Ripley’s Believe It or NotCheck out photos of Tran modeling her TP dress. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
