ON THIS DAY IN 1906, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “B.R.T. Transfer Plan Makes Much Trouble.”

The article focused on the B.R.T. subway line’s problematic new train-transfer system.

“The passengers are for the most part resentful, and many loud words and unprintable exclamations have resulted thus early in the test. The Brooklyn Rapid Transit system gave two reasons yesterday for the change. The first was that many employees have attempted to defraud the company by exchanging transfers; the second, that taking the work out of the hands of conductors would be advantageous,” the Eagle reported.

CONSPIRATORS IN PRESIDENT LINCOLN’S ASSASSINATION WERE HANGED ON THIS DYA IN 1865. Four people convicted of complicity with John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln in April 1865 were hanged in Washington, D.C. They were Mary E. Surratt, Lewis Powell, David E. Herold and George A. Atzerodt. Mary Surratt became the first woman executed for a crime in the U.S. Her conviction was and is a subject of controversy, as the only crime she appeared to have committed was to own the boardinghouse where John Wilkes Booth planned the assassination.

MARC CHAGALL WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1887. He was one of the most important artists of the 20th century, blending a modern sense of the abstract, surreal or magical with a personal and emotive style. He was an accomplished master in many media, including painting, etching, engraving, set design and stained glass. Chagall died in France in 1985.

HAWAII WAS ANNEXED BY THE U.S. ON THIS DAY IN 1898. President William McKinley signed a resolution annexing the area. No change in government took place until 1900, when Congress passed an act making Hawaii an “incorporated” territory of the U.S. This act remained in effect until Hawaii became a state in 1959.

GIAN CARLO MENOTTI WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1911. The composer wrote his first opera at age 11. He won two Pulitzer Prizes for popular the operas “The Consul” and “The Saint of Bleecker Street.” Menotti died in Monaco in 2007.
