ON THIS DAY IN 1948, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Eastern RRs Granted 17% Fare Boosts.”

The article focused on Washington’s decision to increase the fares of 60 Eastern railroads across the country.

“At the offices of the Long Island Railroad it was said that the rate increase would not affect the road’s commuters who travel within the state. However, a passenger buying a ticket for a point outside the state will pay the full 17 percent increase on both a one-way and round-trip fare,” the Eagle reported.

ELIAS HOWE WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1819. The American inventor of the sewing machine died in Brooklyn in 1867 and is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery.

THE 14TH AMENDMENT TO U.S. CONSTITUTION WAS RATIFIED ON THIS DAY IN 1868. The amendment defined U.S. citizenship and provided that no state shall have the right to abridge the rights of any citizen without due process and equal protection under the law. Coming three years after the Civil War, the 14th Amendment also included provisions for barring individuals who assisted in any rebellion or insurrection against the U.S. from holding public office, and releasing federal and state governments from any financial liability incurred in the assistance of rebellion or insurrection against the U.S.

THE FIRST OPEN-HEART SURGERY WAS PERFORMED ON THIS DAY IN 1893. In Provident Hospital on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a black surgeon, performed the first successful open-heart surgery.

ANN WARD RADCLIFFE WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1764. The English author is considered one of the most original and distinguished Gothic romance novelists. She brought poetry to the genre through her lush scenic descriptions. Among her works are “The Romance of the Forest,” “The Mysteries of Udolpho” and “The Italian.” She died in England in 1823.
