Brooklyn Botanic Garden announced the winners of the 23rd annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest on Monday. Taking home the grand prize this year was Stuyvesant Avenue between Bainbridge and Chauncey streets, marking the second time in the past three years that the block has been awarded the win.

The contest promotes city greening, streetscape gardening, tree stewardship and community development, according to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s website. More than 150 blocks from neighborhoods spanning the entire borough entered the contest this year. Winners were selected by an expert panel of judges, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden staff and local horticulture professionals.

Prizes for the top residential and commercial blocks, best window box, greenest storefront, best street tree beds, community garden streetscape and the National Grid Leadership in Sustainable Practices Award were all awarded.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden president Scot Medbury, along with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and others, spoke at the announcement on Monday.

Second-place went to Lefferts Avenue between Bedford and Rogers avenues in Lefferts Gardens, and third-place was awarded to Lincoln Road between Bedford and Rogers avenues, also in Lefferts Gardens.

The Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest is a project of Brooklyn Botanic Garden and BP Adams, with leadership support from Brooklyn Community Foundation. National Grid is the major sponsor for Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Community Greening programs.
