THE LEDE: Happy Friday, Brooklyn! A host of Democratic elected officials come out in support of Mayor de Blasio. We go 500 feet underground with coalminers. Walmart advertises guns as back-to-school items, city council members demand accountability from MTA, and a giant chicken with The Donald’s hair lands near the White House. Plus, Neymar’s debut with PSG could be delayed again, and Prince William and Kate Middleton will be the next king and queen. Have a great weekend, and we’ll see you on Monday.

IMPRINT: Rolling Stone is the latest to label Kendrick Lamar as the “Greatest Rapper Alive” on its most recent cover.

The Rundown

~BROOKLYN LAWMAKERS BACK DE BLASIO: Dozens of Brooklyn’s Democratic elected officials have stepped forward to endorse Mayor Bill de Blasio’s bid for a second term in office, citing the his success in lowering the borough’s crime rate, expanding affordable housing and turning Prospect Park West Drive into a car-free zone as reasons for their support. We have exclusively learned that the lawmakers endorsing de Blasio include Rep.Yvette Clarke, Rep. Nydia Velazquez; Assembly Members Joseph Lentol,Jo Anne SimonFelix Ortiz; Councilmembers Brad LanderLaurie Cumbo,Robert CornegyStephen LevinRafael Espinal and Carlos Menchaca, among others. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN MAY NOT HAVE A SAY IN SQUADRON’S SUCCESSOR: State Sen. Daniel Squadron rocked his district on Wednesday with the news he would be stepping down to fight political corruption on the state and national level. The question of who will replace Squadron for the remainder of his term (about a year and a half is left) is raising concerns that the process for choosing a nominee for the special election could leave Brooklynites without a say. Squadron’s district extends over Manhattan and Brooklyn. Under Democratic Party rules, the party nominee for the vacated seat in the November election will be chosen in an obscure selection process. The rules could allow for those chairs to run a “weighted” process whose outcome will be determined solely by county committee members from Manhattan alone, or will also give county committee members in Brooklyn a vote. Squadron is pushing the political committee chairs to allow Brooklyn’s preference to be considered.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~CITY COUNCIL WEIGHS IN ON ENDLESS SUMMER OF HELL: Angry City Council members got heated and demanded the MTA dish out accountability. MTA Chairman Joe Lhota called for $400 million in emergency funds and Mayor Bill de Blasio fired back with a proposed millionaire tax for the subways, but that’s not enough for neighborhood representatives. “We need to know what we will be paying for,” council speaker Melissa Mark Viverito said. Representative Jumaane Williams accused Lhota of simply mimicking Gov.Andrew Cuomo’s positions on city versus state funding responsibility. But, while the sources of money may still be unclear, the question of when change will be implemented may be even more pressing. (via Gothamist)

~ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY: Rebuilding a franchise and a brand requires great teamwork. The Brooklyn Nets announced Thursday afternoon that they will be undertaking that task under the same roof beginning next summer, when Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, the business branch of the NBA franchise, will be moving into the team’s Industry City-based practice facility in Sunset Park. “Since 2012, our company has nearly doubled in size and we are looking forward to having these new corporate offices in order to support our continued growth,” said BSE CEO Brett Yormark. “Additionally, with Brooklyn Nets business and basketball united under one roof, we will further build a collaborative work environment that encourages innovation and teamwork.”(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~EVERYONE WANTS A FERRY: City council members came together with residents of Coney Island and Canarsie to demand that ferry service be brought to the shores of the two far-out Brooklyn neighborhoods. “The people of Coney Island and Canarsie work hard, pay taxes, play by the rules, and contribute to the vitality and well-being of this city — they deserve a transportation system that will allow them to have a reasonable commute to and from work, to and from school, to and from Manhattan,” representativeHakeem Jeffries said on the steps of City Hall. Last month, the new water-side transportation received its millionth passenger, and there are six new routes on the way in 2018, but none of them are to Coney Island or Canarsie. Mayor Bill de Blasio has said service to the neighborhoods is “on the table,” but little action has been taken, leaving residents and their representatives fuming. (via Brooklyn Daily)

EAGLE SPORTS: The Cyclones finally climbed out of last placeWednesday night in Morgantown, West Virginia. Not out of the McNamara Division cellar, of course. But rather in the New York-Penn League’s team home run standings. Brooklyn entered the contest with a league-low nine long balls through its first 47 contests, but launched three dingers en route to a 9-4 victory over the West Virginia Black Bears in front of 2,267 fans at Monongalia County Ballpark, snapping a five-game losing streak with the rare display of power. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
