NOTABLE PEOPLE born on this day include journalist and commentator DAVID BROOKS, who was born in 1961; actress ARLENE DAHL, who was born in 1928; Emmy Award-winning actress VIOLA DAVIS, who was born in 1965; actor WILL FRIEDLE, who was born in 1976; actor CHRIS HEMSWORTH, who was born in 1983; wrestler and actor HULK HOGAN, who was born in 1953; musician and songwriter JOE JACKSON, who was born in 1954; actress ASHLEY JENSEN, who was born in 1969; actor CHRIS MESSINA, who was born in 1974; model and TV personality CAROLYN MURPHY, who was born in 1973; columnist MARILYN VOS SAVANT, who was born in 1946; and Apple computer co-founder STEPHEN WOZNIAK, who was born in 1950.

THE WATTS RIOT OCCURRED ON THIS DAY IN 1965. A minor clash between the California Highway Patrol and a young black motorist set off six days of riots in the Watts area of Los Angeles. Thirty-four deaths were reported and more than 3,000 people were arrested. Damage to property was listed at $40 million. The less-immediate cause of the disturbance, and the others that followed, was racial tension in American society.

ALEX PALMER HALEY WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1921. The writer and college professor is known for his interview with Malcolm X for Playboy that soon became his first book, “The Autobiography of Malcolm X,” which sold six million copies and was translated into eight languages. “Roots,” his Pulitzer Prize–winning novel published in 1976, sold millions, was translated into 37 languages and was made into an eight-part TV miniseries in 1977. The story generated an enormous interest in family ancestry. Haley died in Seattle in 1992.

TODAY IS THE FEAST DAY OF SAINT CLARE OF ASSISI. Chiara Favorone di Offreduccio, a religious leader inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, was the first woman to write her own religious order rule. Born in Italy in 1194, she died there in 1253. A “Privilege of Poverty” freed her order from any constraint to accept material security, making the “Poor Clares” totally dependent on God.

CARRIE JACOBS BOND WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1862. The American composer is known for her songs “I Love You Truly” and “A Perfect Day,” and for her motion picture scores. Jacobs died in Hollywood in 1946.

MIKE DOUGLAS WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1925. This pioneer of daytime talk shows hosted his first afternoon talk show in Cleveland in 1961 and within five years was a household name. His nationally syndicated show featured celebrity interviews and topics and remained on the air until 1981. The show received the first Emmy Award for Individual Achievement in Daytime Television. Douglas died in 2006 in Florida.
