THE LEDE: Happy Monday, Brooklyn! Daniel Squadron opens up to us about his future. We take you for a trip along the country’s most polluted waterway. Russian surveillance planes fly over Washington (wait, what?), pig organs could soon be transplanted inside humans, and you’ll never guess what’s under the streets of New York. Plus, there’s a new restaurant serving champagne and tater tots. And, the Nets unleash their sleek new uniforms. Have a great week.

IMPRINT: The Summer of Hell comes to life on the latest cover of The New Yorker.

~SQUADRON LOOKS FORWARD TO HIS NEW POLITICAL ROLEDaniel Squadron had no regrets as he took his leave from the New York state Senate. He is looking forward to a new venture in which he will be teaming up with entrepreneur Adam Pritzker and economist Dr. Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University on a nationwide project to promote Democratic ideas and support political candidates. “I have loved every minute of serving my constituents. But since the election of Donald Trump and over the course of the last year, it has become increasingly clear to me that I should be working to affect change,” said Squadron. He admitted, however, that it wasn’t just the election of Trump that led to his decision to leave the state Legislature. He candidly told us about the problems and frustrations associated with being a member of the minority part in the state senate. “There are structural barriers to getting things done,” he said. “Majority power is absolutely power.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN RENTAL CONCESSIONS AT A HIGH: Concessions at residential apartment buildings in Brooklyn were the highest they’ve been in seven years this July. At more than double the amount from last year, 22.1 percent of new rental deals included concessions this year. “It’s been a viable tool for landlords to protect the base rent,” Jonathan Miller, author of a report on concessions said. “In other words, they’re able to show that the base rent isn’t declining.” However, compared to last July, Brooklyn’s average rent with concessions dropped for the third consecutive month to $2,745. (via The Real Deal)

~A WALKING TOUR OF THE GOWANUS CANAL: Toxic romance. Everybody’s in love with the Gowanus Canal, including us. One of the things that makes the weirdly picturesque waterway so fascinating is its jaw-dropping toxicity. Though if your jaw literally drops, for heaven’s sake don’t let any of the canal’s scummy water splash into your open mouth. The 1.8-mile waterway winds through Gowanus, then through Red Hook and out to Gowanus Bay. So come with us as we show you the wonders of arguably the most polluted waterway in the country. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~KITE SURFER’S BODY WASHES UP IN JERSEY: The body of a Brooklyn kite surfer was found washed up on the shore of Long Branch, N.J. after he was nearly saved. A boater first reported seeing the man in distress by Horseshoe Cove in Gateway National Park. When the sailor approached him, the surfer was unconscious and a gust of wind pulled the man and his kite away from the boat. After a search from Sandy Hook to Coney Island, the body of Sinisa Bjelajac was found on the Jersey side of the waters. (via NBC New York)
