THE LEDE: Happy hump day, Brooklyn! The Islanders are closer to leaving Brooklyn for Belmont. One Brooklyn Heights resident debates whether it was the right move to landmark the neighborhood. We have some tips on how to survive a riptide, and the Olympics are coming to L.A. Plus, you might want to think twice before using the Roosevelt Island tram after 65 people were saved from a dangling cable car in Germany. And if you’re in need of evening plans, tonight’s A Summer Movie Under the Stars at Prospect Park.

~FORMER BAM CHAIRMAN SELLS HIS BROOKLYN HEIGHTS HOUSE: All in the family. Alan Fishman, who stepped down as the chairman of Brooklyn Academy of Music’s board of trustees in January, has sold his Brooklyn Heights Historic District house to his son. Alan Fishman and his wife Judith Fishman sold 6 Willow Place for $4.5 million to Benjamin D. Fishman and his wife Elizabeth Weinreb Fishman. The Gothic Revival house is part of a distinctive row of duplexes on the corner of Joralemon Street that was built around 1847. The houses have coupled porches with little columns. (via the Brooklyn Daily

~IS SAVANNAH, GEORGIA THE NEXT BROOKLYN?: Probably not, but the southern city is on a trendy rise from its past of hurricane beaten decay and lack of maintenance. “That’s what it was when I came in 1977 – very sad-looking! It had good bones and great architecture but had fallen into disrepair,” said president and founder of Savannah College of Art and Design Paula Wallace. The city still greets its visitors with moss-infested walkways and a fishy waft of air every now and then from its nearby rivers, but an insurgence of upscale restaurants, hotels and museums has shown that Savannah has spruced up. Just like a gentrified Brooklyn neighborhood, the cobblestone paths of Savannah are increasingly filled with cocktail bars, art exhibits and international cuisine. But the city hasn’t lost its southern charm yet; it still maintains a strong presence of barbecue. (via Vogue)

~BYE, BYE BARCLAYS: Divorces can get very messy and even a bit nasty. The one between the New York Islanders and Downtown Brooklyn’sBarclays Center has been moving along quietly and without a hint of animosity. That’s probably because the parting, whenever it finally comes, will be a mutual one. The Islanders, eager to get out of their lease agreement atBarclays Center after only two seasons here, are reportedly set to begin putting together a Request for Proposal to say goodbye to Brooklyn and hello to Belmont Park. It’s a spot Islanders co-owners Scott Malkin and Jon Ledecky covet, though neither will say so until the first shovel is dug into the ground of what they hope will be a sparkling new hockey arena for the Brooklyn-based NHL franchise. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~WAS LANDMARKING BROOKLYN HEIGHTS SMART?: Compared to other areas of Brooklyn, Brooklyn Heights is a ’hood frozen in time. “We basically live in a museum with restaurants,” said Sandy Ikeda, a resident of the Heights and an economics professor at SUNY Purchase. The designation of Brooklyn Heights as a landmark is behind the freezing, and Ikeda argues that this designation could have impeded the natural evolution of the neighborhood, leading to an economically uniform area with increasing rents. However, with or without the landmarking, the Heights would have likely been subject to commercialization, Ikeda said. Whether landmarking the district was the right move or not is up for debate, but Brooklyn Heights could be used as an example moving forward on landmarking decisions. (via Brooklyn Heights Blog)

~HASTA LA VISTA, LADY: The statue is gone. It stood in front of Our Lady of Loreto, a historic Catholic church in the Ocean Hill section of Brownsville. The now-vacant church was built more than a century ago as a refuge for Italian immigrants who were discriminated against by Catholics of other ethnicities. When we took a visit to the church on Tuesday, the statue of Our Lady of Loreto was missing from its pedestal on the corner of Sackman and Pacific streets. The removal of the statue is an ominous occurrence as far as preservationists are concerned — a sign that Catholic officials are preparing to move forward with the planned demolition of the church. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
