THE LEDE: Happy Tuesday, Brooklyn! As four more confederate monuments topple in Austin, Texas, U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke plans a rally to protest the army’s refusal to rename two streets named for Confederate generals. We have coverage from the “Great American Eclipse,” and police officers rally in support of quarterback Colin Kaepernick in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Plus, we’re losing more parking spots, texting and walking is now illegal in one city, and we look at how Dylann Roof became an American terrorist.

IMPRINT: The Backstreet Boys make a comeback on the most recent cover of Paper Magazine.

~CLARKE TO HOLD RALLY TODAY OUTSIDE FORT HAMILTON: Putting pressure on the U.S. Army hasn’t worked, so a Brooklyn lawmaker is turning to other methods to try and force the federal government to remove tributes to two Confederate generals from the U.S. Army Garrison at Fort Hamilton. U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-Central Brooklyn) is coming to Bay Ridge today to lead a protest rally in John Paul Jones Park outside the main gate of Fort Hamilton to demand that the Army change the names of two streets located within the fort: General Lee Avenue and Stonewall Jackson Drive. The rally will take place inside the park, located on Fourth Avenue and 101st Street, at 11 a.m. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BROOKLYN CELEBRATES ‘GREAT AMERICAN ECLIPSE’: Hundreds of Brooklynites gathered at Pioneer Works in Red Hook yesterday to experience the Great American Eclipse, learn a little about astronomy — and party, of course. Members of the Amateur Astronomers Association of New Yorkset up telescopes with special filters and explained the science behind the eclipse, while volunteers helped people make pinhole cameras using tubes, cereal boxes and pieces of paper. Not everyone, however, could fit into Pioneer Works. A crowd gathered across the street for their own impromptu eclipse party, where a man dressed in all white with a full set of white angel wings told us, “I love coming to the city. I’m a city person, and I’m an angel. I believe I can fly.” In addition, dozens of people flocked to the Brooklyn HeightsPromenade to view the historic event with the breathtaking backdrop of New York Harbor and the Lower Manhattan skyline. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~KAEPERNICK GETS SUPPORT FROM THE FORCE: Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick may have gotten some flak when he refused to stand during the national anthem last season, but current and former NYPD officers have his back. Dozens of officers gathered in Brooklyn Bridge Park on Saturday wearing shirts saying, “#IMWITHKAP.” Kaepernick said he was protesting police violence against minorities when he refused to stand for the anthem. The move caused the 49ers to drop him, and he received collective hate from law enforcement and football fans alike. But the officers who gathered in Brooklyn disagreed. “They said he disrespected law enforcement,” said Sgt. Edwin Raymond, the organizer of the event. “Well, I’m law enforcement, and he didn’t disrespect me.” (via The New York Times)

~SECURITY AND SUNLIGHT FOR THIS YEAR’S J’OUVERT FESTIVAL: In an effort to curb violence at Brooklyn’s J’Ouvert festival, organizers and city officials announced yesterday that they are increasing security and starting festivities two hours later this year. Hundreds of thousands of people come out each year on Labor Day to celebrate the Caribbean celebration of J’Ouvert, which sprouted from the French term, “daybreak.” This year, the festivities will begin at 6 a.m. rather than the traditional 4 a.m., a move that police think will help deter violence. The parade route on Flatbush Avenue from Grand Army Plaza to Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights will be closed to the public the night before the parade. There will also be hundreds of more police officers in the area compared to last year. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~DESIGNATED PARKING FOR CAR-SHARING DRIVERS: Drivers who struggle to find parking spaces might soon be better off getting behind the wheel of a shared car. The NYC Department of Transportation is initiating atwo-year pilot program to reduce car ownership by setting up designated parking spots around the city for car-share companies. Roughly 300 street spots and 300 spaces inside parking facilities will be given to users of companies like Zipcar and Car2go. DOT is expected to install signs that read “Carshare Parking Only,” with the specific company name designated for the spot. Participating companies will be announced this fall. (via Next City)

EAGLE SPORTS: On a night where fans were given collectable Marcos Senna T-shirts, and with the former Cosmos great in attendance, New York displayed a gutsy performance on Saturday to come from behind twice to salvage a point against the Indy Eleven. “It was one of our best performances offensively,” said Cosmos head coach and Sporting Director Giovanni Savarese after his team’s 3-3 draw in front of 6,100 fans at MCU Park. “We did a lot of good things. I think we still can work on some aspects, in which I think we can capitalize more of the opportunities that we have.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
