THE LEDE: Happy Friday, Brooklyn! Ever wonder why there’s so few women in city government? We have the answers. Robots and drones invade Brooklyn, we speak with Gene Roddenberry, and it’s the end of an era at the Village Voice. Plus, the Cyclones are on the brink of a historic slide, and a garbage man falls asleep behind the wheel, and the results aren’t pretty. Finally, a man is forced to take an 11-hour flight on a urine covered seat. Have a great weekend.

~WHY ARE THERE SO FEW WOMEN IN CITY GOVERNMENT?: Thirteen of the City Council’s 51 members are women. That’s barely a quarter. And the number could drop to as low as nine after the Nov. 7 election, according to the findings of a new report on gender equity in NYC politics. Commissioned by the Women’s Caucus of the City Council, the report, “Not Making It Here: Why Are Women Underrepresented in New York City Politics,” was released yesterday. “Not Making It Here” identifies several factors that hold women back from running for elected office. The factors include a lack of awareness of their potential for success, and evidence shows that men are 40 percent more likely than women to consider running for office in the first place. Another obstacle for women is family responsibilities: Women with children are often reluctant to run for office out of fear that they will cease to be present for their children. The report also found that women face discrimination in politics. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~ROBOTS AND DRONES COME TO BROOKLYN: Want to fly a drone, create art with movable sound cubes or try on a haptic suit? A weekend of bleeding edge technology, futurist talks, interactive art and immersive experiences will be taking place at Worlds Fair Nano at the Brooklyn Expo Center inGreenpoint on Sept. 16-17. Visitors will be able to touch and play with future tech at a “Technology Playground,” immerse themselves into virtual reality, see bionic boots that allow a person to run at 25 mph, eat future food (hint: crickets are going to be big) or race around a mega track on an electric skateboard, to name just a few options. The event’s speaker series includes more than 45 recognized experts, talking on such topics as the future of work, artificially intelligent people, the ethics of bioengineering, the future of dating and the future of location data. A number of Brooklyn-based artists will also be showcasing their work. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~POSSIBLE HISTORIC DESIGNATION FOR BAY RIDGE: Bay Ridge might get acclaim for having diverse architecture, but the famous homogeneous Doctors’ Row could end up looking the same for years to come. The Bay Ridge Parkway Block Association was fed up with people transforming the faces of the row houses between Fourth and Fifth avenues on Bay Ridge Parkway, so it reached out to the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The goal ofhistorical designation may be in reach, according to the commission. “It will benefit both local residents commuting to their homes and tourists exploring Brooklyn’s history,” Councilmember Vincent Gentile said of the designation. If granted, Doctors’ Row, a common place for Brooklynites to get check-ups, would be protected from demolition and major changes. (via Brownstoner)

~GARBAGE MAN TOTALS ROW OF CARS: They often come when you’re sleeping to collect the trash, but this garbage man dozed off at the wheel and made an even bigger mess in Bed-Stuy when he crashed into a row of parked cars. The driver for private garbage-collecting company Crown Container was catching some z’s when his truck drifted into a row of cars near Nostrand and Flushing avenues. Several of the cars were totaled so badly that they were brought to a scrap yard. Surveillance video shows the truck gradually veering off the road and bashing into the cars while drivers behind the truck come to a stop. The driver wasn’t arrested, and no one was hurt in the crash. (via DNAinfo)

EAGLE SPORTS: The Cyclones have already suffered the most losses of any ball club that has ever graced the grass on Coney Island. That’s dating back to the franchise’s origins here in the summer of 2001. They also have scored the least runs (203 through 60 games) and own the worst team ERA (4.72) on the 14-team New York-Penn League circuit. With a loss Thursdaynight against the blistering-hot Renegades, who have reeled off 12 consecutive wins during Brooklyn’s slide into the abyss, the Cyclones (15-45) will become the first team in the modern history of the NY-Penn to drop 13 consecutive games. Yikes! (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
