~BROOKLYN POL CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF COLUMBUS STATUTES:Following the chaos of Charlottesville, Virginia, and the fight over the removal of confederate monuments across the nation, an unrelated historical figure has also become a target: Christopher Columbus. While Columbus was an ambitious pioneer, he was also known for his violent tactics used to colonize and oppress Native Americans. Due to controversy surrounding Columbus, Speaker of the New York City Council Melissa Mark-Viverito and Councilmember Jumaane Williams are urging for the removal of Columbus statues across NYC. “We have to create a box where we gauge everyone and say what are the redemptive things that you’ve done, and do they outweigh some of the craziness that you have?,” said Williams. “I think the answer for Columbus is no. He is a symbol of genocide, and most of the things that would go in that redemptive box are actually based on falsehoods like him having discovered America.”

~NYC COUNCIL PASSES OFFICE OF NIGHTLIFE BILL: As expected, the New York City Council approved Councilmember Rafael Espinal’s bill to implement an Office of Nightlife, nightlife director and Nightlife Advisory Board on Thursday. “NYC’s nightlife culture is an integral part of its identity, yet bureaucratic red tape, rising rents and lack of community planning has made it increasingly difficult for venues that contribute to our iconic nightlife to stay in business,” said Espinal. “This bill will create a space where all stakeholders can come together to solve conflicts and build bridges.” MayorBill de Blasio now has 30 days to sign the bill into law. Even if he chooses not to sign it in that month, it will still become a law 120 days after that period.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~BP ADAMS TO MAKE RECOMMENDATION ON BEDFORD-UNION ARMORY: This week, BP Eric Adams will be issuing his recommendation on the controversial plan to develop the Bedford-Union Armory in Crown Heights, as part of ULURP. At a dramatic press conference in May, joined by Councilmember Laurie Cumbo and other city officials, Adams came out against the development as it stands. The project, which would include office space and a sports complex, along with affordable and market-rate rentals and condos, has been subject of numerous protests from residents pushing for more low-income housing in rapidly gentrifying Crown Heights. It is supported by Mayor Bill de Blasio. As part of the effort by developer BFC Partners to garner Adams’ support, Rev. Daryl Bloodsaw, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Crown Heights, is scheduled to deliver nearly 400 letters backing the project to Borough Hall today. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~HIGH-END DRUG TREATMENT IS ON THE WAY: Brooklyn’s newest drug treatment facility intends to treat its patients well. The new Phoenix Life Center in DUMBO will offer aromatherapy, a private courtyard, a rooftop gym and a professional chef. Both outpatient and residential patients will be able to see the sweeping vista of the Manhattan skyline from the facility. The design strives for comfortability at a price of roughly half the typical residential drug treatment rate. The center is scheduled to open on Sept. 5(via NYDN)

~BROOKLYN’S FIRST SUPERTALL SKYSCRAPER RISES: For years, Brooklyn’s tallest building was the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, with its clock tower giving the time to Brooklynites far and wide. It was later surpassed by the Brooklyner apartment building at 514 feet. A supertall skyscraper more than double that size, however, is currently on the rise in Downtown Brooklyn. At an estimated 1,066 feet, 9 DeKalb Avenue will rise higher and higher from the base of the old Dime Savings Bank until its peak in 2020. The luxury high-rise will display glass and bronze in an interlocking hexagonal design with retail stores at its base and apartments throughout. “We believe in Brooklyn. It deserves a best-in-class skyline,” said Michael Stern, the founder of the firm behind the tower. The nearby Boerum Hill Association voiced concern over the change in the Brooklyn skyline, however, saying it will be out of scale with the low buildings of nearby neighborhoods. (via The Bridge and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
