Last Wednesday, former Brooklyn GOP Chairman Craig Eaton and his wife Susan hosted a meet and greet for City Council candidate Bob Capano at their Bay Ridge home. A number of guests including radio host and Red Apple Group CEO John Catsimatidis were there to show their support for Capano.

Community leaders attending included 64th Assembly District Republican Leader Veronica Pawson, former 46th Assembly District Republican Leader Clorinda Annarummo, 47th Assembly District Republican Leader Phyllis Carbo, 52nd Assembly District Republican Leader Elizabeth Tretter, Brooklyn Young Republicans President Vito DiGiovanni, Republican candidate for Brooklyn Borough President Vito Bruno, former 47th Assembly District Republican Leader Russell Gallo and former Brooklyn Young Republicans President Diana Sepulveda.

Capano, a Republican and Reform candidate in the 43rd City Council District (Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Bensonhurst), is an adjunct professor of history at John Jay College of Criminal Justice and also manages a Gristedes supermarket.

Eaton welcomed the guests and said that he has known Capano for more than 10 years. “Bob is young, energetic, passionate and has a firm grasp of the issues facing the constituents of the district since he was born, raised, educated and resides in Bay Ridge.

“Bob and I worked together tirelessly and collaborated on a wide range of issues, but all with one focus: making Brooklyn a better, safer, cleaner and more enjoyable place to live — skills which will serve him well while serving his constituents in the New York City Council,” said Eaton.

Eaton then introduced Catsimatidis, who said he was glad to be back in Brooklyn and that he has always loved the borough.

He called the City Council race critical, and praised Capano as one of the hardest workers in his supermarkets. “He works a full-time job, plus taking care of his family, plus being a teacher, plus running a full-time campaign. How many people can do that?”

Catsimatidis said that Capano was the right man for the City Council and had his complete support.

Capano thanked Eaton as a great personal friend and political leader who has always been there for him, and Catsimatidis, who taught him two valuable lessons: “To always tell the truth and to always talk common sense.”

Capano said that he has proud to have worked with both Brooklyn’s top Democratic and Republican officials, citing as examples his tenure as the director of community boards for former Democratic Borough President Marty Markowtiz, district director for former Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Turner and Brooklyn director to former Republican Sen. Vito Fossella.

“So if Republicans and Democrats can together and agree that I am good enough to work for them, I believe voters will say that I am good enough to represent this community regardless of party affiliation,” said Capano, who promised to bring sanity and common sense back to the City Council.

The other Republicans running in the GOP primary on Sept. 12 are Liam McCabe, Lucretia Regina-Potter and John Quaglione

The Democrats running in the Democratic primary, also set for Sept. 12, are Justin Brannan, Kevin Peter Carroll, Vincent Chirico, Rev. Khader El-Yateem and Nancy Tong.

The general election will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
