~CANDIDATES SEEKING CHANGE RAIL AGAINST BOARD OF ELECTIONS: Roughly a dozen candidates running for positions in Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and beyond gathered in front of the Brooklyn Board of Elections on Adams Street Tuesday, calling for election law reform and the defeat of their political opponents in the city and state’s political machine. The candidates are backed by the New York Bernie Sanders Committee for Change, which is demanding a criminal investigation into last year’s voting fiasco on the eve of the Democratic presidential primary, in which more than 126,000 voters were wiped off the rolls. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
 
~THE RIVER CAFE CELEBRATES 40 YEARS AFLOAT: When the River Cafe opened in the 1970s, the area surrounding the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges was desolate and the waterfront was on a steady decline. Flash forward 40 years and DUMBO has the highest property value in Brooklyn. The owner of the cafe Michael O’Keeffe kept the restaurant at sea level the whole time, accumulating a Michelin Star and nationally-renowned chefs amongst battle wounds from Hurricane Sandy. The famous eatery beat the crowd on the farm-to-table movement, as it’s been collecting its cuisine from the Hudson Valley since its early stages. And even though New York banks declined O’Keeffe original loans, the restaurant is accredited to sparking the DUMBO revival. Despite its high prices and prestigious awards, O’Keeffe says he’s far from retirement and can still be caught meandering through the dining room or fishing off the side of the restaurant. (via the New York Times)
 
~FDNY CLEANS UP AFTER CLINTON CAMPAIGN: The FDNY is negotiating to lease half of Hillary Clinton’s former campaign headquarters after her campaign ended in ashes. The department hopes to take 40,000 square feet on the 11th floor of the 19-story tower at 1 Pierrepont Plaza in Brooklyn Heights. As Clinton won’t be needing it anymore, it would give New York’s Bravest more space than their cramped MetroTech offices. The FDNY plans to move 170 employees into the empty space. (via The Real Deal) 
 
~ETSY IS HAVING AN IDENTITY CRISIS: After Brooklyn’s biggest tech company Etsy fired its CEO and slashed hundreds of jobs, it’s learning the hard way that it might not be a tech startup anymore. One reporter for the Wall Street Journal says, “The online marketplace for handmade and vintage goods, which calls itself a ‘sophisticated technology platform’ and says it treats ‘code as craft,’ is now under pressure to stop spending like a tech startup and start acting like a retailer.” Etsy announced a second round of layoffs in June, cutting 140 positions, or 15 percent of its staff. The DUMBO-based business, which was founded in 2005, dismissed an additional 80 people in May to reduce costs. The most recent round of cuts brings Etsy’s total number of people let go to 230, or 22 percent of the company’s headcount at the end of 2016. (via WSJ and the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
 
~NIGHT OUT AGAINST CRIME DRAWS HUNDREDS: Police precincts throughout Brooklyn celebrated National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday. The event is held every year to educate and inform residents about precisely what their law enforcement precincts do and how to stay vigilant and remain safe in their neighborhoods. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner James O’Neill attended the event in Coney Island. But the 68th Precinct celebration in Bay Ridge was one of the borough’s biggest with State Sen. Marty Golden welcoming the crowd. It was one giant block party with a variety of food, games for kids and a chance to meet and thank the NYPD and FDNY for all they do for the city. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

 EAGLE SPORTS: John Tavares isn’t going anywhere. At least that’s what the New York Islanders’ captain and one of the top 10 players in the NHLindicated Tuesday. “It’s obviously a great place to play. I’ve really enjoyed my time being an Islander and I want that to continue,” Tavares told TSN when asked about his free agency following the 2017-18 season, and the Islanders’ desire to get him inked to a long-term contract extension this summer. Tavares, a two-time Hart Trophy finalist and face of the Brooklyn-based franchise since being selected first overall in the 2009 NHL Draft, is about to enter the final season of his six-year, $33 million contract. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
