More than 100 volunteers and supporters made their way to the Bay Ridge Manor last Wednesday evening to join in a rally for John Quaglione, who is running for the District 43 (Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) GOP City Council seat.

The event was hosted by state Sen. Marty Golden (R-C-Bay Ridge-Southwest Brooklyn), who has been a vocal supporter of Quaglione throughout his campaign. Quaglione worked with Golden for 19 years, and is Golden’s deputy chief of staff, currently on leave of absence.

In his enthusiastic introduction, Golden offered strong words of praise for Quaglione, and said that the decision to endorse him was an easy one. Golden detailed all the initiatives he’s tackled with Quaglione and admitted that if Quaglione were to win the City Council seat it would be an added advantage because together they could continue to accomplish even more.

“We all know why we are here tonight.,” said Golden. “We’re here to elect somebody who will represent us in the City Council. Someone who will make a difference to each and every one of our families, who will make a difference to our property values, our businesses, our schools and the future education of our children.”

Golden, a former police officer, highlighted Quaglione’s record on matters of public safety and his support of police officers, along with various initiatives geared toward keeping the community safe. Golden also cited the work he and Quaglione have done in keeping Shore Road Park clean and safe over the years.

And regarding the issue of what Golden called “the worst transportation in the city of New York.” He explained, “We’ve got to change that and we’re going to change that with John Quaglione in the City Council. The only reason we got express bus service in this community was John Quaglione working with me to make that happen.”

Golden also spoke about having mapped out a strategy with Quaglione to help remedy overcrowding in schools due to illegal home conversions. He emphasized Quaglione’s vast experience working alongside him and how together they would continue to tackle the major issues that most directly affect the families living in the Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst communities.

Golden received a round of applause when he said that he and Quaglione would continue to work on creating new jobs and keeping jobs in the neighborhood “that offer decent salaries so that residents will be able to raise their families here and not have to move away.”

Quaglione thanked Golden and said that when he goes door to door campaigning for votes each evening, the first thing someone will say when he tells them he has Golden’s support is, “If you’ve got Marty’s vote, then you’ve got our vote.”

He impressed upon his supporters how much he appreciated their work on his behalf and said he was concentrating on “the right issues that we need to be talking about at this pivotal time in the neighborhood, such as getting more cops on the street, cleaning up graffiti, bettering the quality of life and opposing the City Council proposed garbage tax.”

Further, Quaglione addressed the need to abolish the antiquated 5 cent bottle deposit and fight illegal home conversions in Dyker Heights and Bay Ridge. As an example, he singled out one house in the neighborhood that was being used as a hotel with people coming in and renting out beds for eight-hour shifts.

He received applause when he emphasized the importance of listening to the problems of the community adding, “If you make their problem your problem, they will never forget you.”
