Eid al-Adha, or the “Feast of Sacrifice,” an important Islamic holiday that marks the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham to Christian and Jewish faiths) to sacrifice his son. During the holiday that usually lasts four days, Muslims slaughter sheep or cattle, distribute part of the meat to the poor and eat the rest.

INDIA — Heavy Rains Bring Down Building: A rescue worker makes an announcement on a loudspeaker at the site of a building collapse in Mumbai on Thursday. A five-story building collapsed in the country’s financial capital after torrential rains lashed western India.

MALTA — Migrants Receive Aid: African migrants stand on the deck of the SOS Mediterranee on the Mediterranean Sea on Thursday. The more than 200 people who were rescued from the sea during the previous days are being transferred to Italy.

MALAYSIA — Country Celebrates Independence: Students carry Malaysian national flags during the 60th National Day celebrations in Independence Square in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. Aug. 31 marks the day that the Federation of Malaya gained its independence from the British in 1957.

SOUTH KOREA — Praying for Peace: Christians pray during a service for peace on the Korean Peninsula near the U.S. Embassy in Seoul on Thursday. The U.S. flew some of its most advanced warplanes in bombing drills with ally South Korea on Thursday, a clear warning after North Korea launched a midrange ballistic missile designed to carry nuclear bombs over Japan earlier this week, South Korea’s military said. North Korea hates such displays of U.S. military might at close range and will likely respond with fury.

THAILAND — Customs Cracks Down on Smugglers: A Thai customs official displays one of 136 pangolins and 992 lbs. of pangolin scales it seized, estimated to be worth more than $75,278 during a press conference at the Customs Department headquarters in Bangkok on Thursday. Officials received a tip-off that there would be an attempt to smuggle pangolins from Malaysia.

Santa Rosa de Lima was the first person born in the Americas to be canonized by the Catholic church. She is also the co-patroness of the Philippines, but remains the primary patroness of Peru and Latin America’s indigenous.

TEXAS – Rescuing the Elderly: Members of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and the Louisiana National Guard help rescue with elderly people from the Golden Years Assisted Living home, which was flooded from Tropical Storm Harvey in Orange, Texas, Wednesday. The residents and staff were high and dry on the second floor.

BRAZIL – Indigenous Protest: A Guarani woman protests Brazilian President Michel Temer’s plan to restrict land titles to indigenous communities, in Brasilia, Brazil, Wednesday. Guaranis set up a camp outside the Ministry of Justice to demand title to their land located on the peak of Mount Jaragua, in Sao Paulo state.
