~5 YEARS POST-SANDY, RED HOOK HOUSES GET SOME HELP: It’s been five years since Superstorm Sandy ravaged the city, and on Tuesday, the New York City Housing Authority broke ground on a $63 million project to replace all 28 roofs at Red Hook Houses. The roof repairs are just the beginning of an almost $550 million investment in Red Hook Houses to harden the housing project against future catastrophes. The program will repair and replace key infrastructure, flood-proof the structures and install standby backup power generators, among other repairs. As this summer’s hurricanes pile up in the Atlantic Ocean, eyes are on projects like this, which aim to transform vulnerable locations into resilient sites. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
~MENCHACA PUSHES CITY TO PROTECT DACA IMMIGRANTS:Responding to President Donald Trump’s decision to end the DACA program protecting undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children, Brooklyn Councilmember Carlos Menchaca is moving quickly on an effort to shore up the city’s support for so-called Dreamers, the young adults who fall under DACA regulations. Menchaca, chairman of the Council’s Committee on Immigration, announced that his committee has voted to approve two billsaimed at protecting the Dreamers. One bill, sponsored by Menchaca and Councilmember Daniel Dromm, would create an interagency task force to support DACA-vulnerable immigrants living in NYC. A second bill, sponsored by Dromm and Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez, would expand the role of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
~ELIOT SPITZER’S COMEBACK STARTS IN WILLIAMSBURG: After Eliot Spitzer’s political career came to an abrupt end involving prostitution accusations, his first Brooklyn real estate project under his family’s business, Spitzer Enterprises, continues to rise in South Williamsburg. Three 22-story towers with 857 rental apartments are set to add a flare of new development to the often forgotten southern waterfront of the neighborhood. Spitzer argues its success will be ensured by the nearby development of the Domino Sugar refinery, the NYC Ferry and the waterfront views. Roughly a year after construction began, the first of the three buildings has topped out and the second has begun to rise alongside the development of Spitzer’s career. The first tower is expected to be ready for residents by next summer. (via The Bridge)
~SEPT. 11 VICTIM COMPENSATION FUND STILL AT WORK: In the days leading up to the 16th anniversary of the World Trade Center terror attack, the Sept. 11 Victim Compensation Fund, the program established by the federal government to provide financial assistance to victims and first responders,released a report detailing the payments it has made over the years. VCF Special Master Rupa Bhattacharyya said the program has made great strides in recent years speeding up the claims process so that recipients can receive funds faster. “I am keenly aware that each and every one of these claims represents a life forever changed,” Bhattacharyya said. “I am also aware of the tremendous need for compensation that exists in the 9/11 community. We are committed to making improvements wherever possible in order to process claims as quickly and efficiently as possible, without compromising accuracy, thoroughness, or fairness.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
~MAYOR SAYS NO TO TOLLS ON EAST RIVER BRIDGES: Drivers that traverse the bridges connecting Brooklyn and Queens to Manhattan are likely pleased their trips over the East River have always been toll-free, and even though some local politicians want to change that, the mayor has the backs of the drivers. As the question of whether tolls should be placed on the bridges to help pay for the MTA arises, Mayor Bill de Blasio says it would be unfair to suddenly start asking commuters for more money, even though other boroughs are already subject to hefty tolls. “My point is simply this: you’ve got two boroughs that have not had tolls on those bridges since those bridges have existed,” de Blasio said. “They between them are almost five million New Yorkers, and no plan that I’ve seen has responded to the fact that those five million New Yorkers will be paying for something they did not have to pay for in the past.” City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito challenged the mayor on his stance and stands in support of the tolls. Slightly over half of city residents don’t own cars and those who do, typically have a higher than average income, according to a Tri-State Transportation Campaign study. (via the Daily News)

EAGLE SPORTS: Leaving a city of 932,000 in Edmonton, Alberta for a borough with more than twice that population in Brooklyn is just one of the many adjustments Jordan Eberle will have to make as he prepares to kick off his first season with the New York Islanders. The 27-year-old winger, who was general manager Garth Snow’s biggest offseason acquisition earlier this summer, spent his first seven seasons with the Edmonton Oilers before finding his way to Brooklyn in June. Eberle, a four-time 20-goal scorer, made the rounds on his first official media tour through Manhattan as a member of the Islanders last week, and intimated that he’s ready to embrace New York and all that comes with it. “It does feel a little bit weird, but it’s exciting,” Eberle said.(via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
