THE LEDE: Happy hump day, Brooklyn! Mayor de Blasio fights climate change, a Russian helicopter accidently shoots at innocent bystanders, and Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pop-Up Pool will be back for one more summer. A pair of nooses found in the borough spark rage, coffee can help with heart programs, and we go on a tour of Perugia, Italy. Plus, Sean Spicer has some regrets, we share the eight words the Royal Family can never say, and pirates may be the reason America doesn’t use the metric system. (Yes, you read that correctly.)

IMPRINT: Lorde gets ready for fall on Vogue Australia’s October cover.

~REPRIEVE FOR BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK’S POP-UP POOL: Hooray! Kids will get to splish and splash for one more summer in Brooklyn Bridge Park’s popular Pop-Up Pool. The temporary pool will be open for one last season through September 2018. Nestled into the uplands at Pier 2, the free Pop-Up Pool first opened in 2012, and includes a beach, deck concessions, showers and restrooms. The 30-by-50-foot pool has been a big hit with parkgoers, who come from both the nearby neighborhood and from across the borough to enjoy a free swim. The pool was slated to close after the 2016 season, but after a determined campaign by Brooklyn families and former state Sen.Daniel Squadron, the attraction received a one-year extension after its original five year term expired. Next summer will be absolutely the last year for the pool, however, as it is located in the site of the planned Pier 2 uplands where construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2018. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~TEAM FROM NYU TANDON WINS $1M PRIZE IN SMART GUN COMPETITION: Autonomous Ballistics, a team from New York University Tandon School of Engineering, took home the $1 million prize in a Smart Gun Design Competition funded by former cop and gun owner Brooklyn BP Eric Adams. And the winning team’s design is not actually a gun — but a smart holster. At a ceremony on Monday at Borough Hall, a panel of judges announced that the smart holster was the most promising proposal to prevent unauthorized users from firing a gun, a thorny issue with political and social ramifications in a society sick of gun violence, yet where gun ownership is the rule in many parts of the country. The smart holster uses fingerprint ID, RFID and voice identification to keep out everyone but the legal owner and up to 200 other users. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~AFTER EQUIFAX FIASCO, CUOMO ORDERS CLAMP DOWN ON CREDIT REPORTING AGENCIES: If you have any kind of credit, there’s a good chance that you’re one of the 143 million Americans whose personal information was exposed in a cyberattack on credit reporting agency Equifax. To help prevent this type of attack in the future, Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday said he is directing the NY Department of Financial Services to issue new regulationsrequiring credit reporting agencies to register and comply with a tougher cybersecurity standard. The state may refuse to renew a consumer credit reporting agency’s registration if it finds that the agency is not trustworthy or competent. According to the Federal Trade Commission, the hackers accessed people’s names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses, credit card numbers and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~DE BLASIO FIGHTS CLIMATE CHANGE: With New York City’s skyscrapers looming behind him, Mayor Bill de Blasio visited Brooklyn Bridge Park last week to announce new rules that would force thousands of building owners to retrofit their buildings in order to make sharp reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. Citing disasters ranging from Superstorm Sandy to the recent hurricanes in Texas and Florida, the mayor said New York City must lead the way on climate change initiatives. “The number one problem is those buildings you see behind me,” de Blasio said as he turned and pointed to the massive structures across the East River. “When we think about pollution we think about vehicles, but these buildings actually are the biggest problem that has not yet been addressed in this city. We’re not waiting on President Trump and his cabinet of deniers.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~LEADERS DENOUNCE NOOSES ON BROOKLYN TREES: With 144 hate crimes in NYC this year, which is double the amount from last year at this time, community leaders and NAACP leaders publically denounced a pair of nooses hanging from Brooklyn trees. Councilman Robert Cornegy stood outside the Brooklyn Public Library’s Bedford branch, where one noose was found, and put blame on President Trump’s controversial speeches. “We believe that the rhetoric from the White House contributes directly to setting a climate that makes people think that it’s acceptable that these acts take place,” Cornegy said. The second noose was found hanging from a tree on Eastern Parkway near the Brooklyn Museum. As police investigations continue, the protesters demanded those responsible be found. (via the Daily News)

EAGLE SPORTS: The New York Islanders aren’t sure how long they will be in Brooklyn. Nor do they have knowledge of exactly where their next home arena will be located. But one thing was evident from Sunday afternoon’s one-off visit to NYCB Live, better known as the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, they still love the “Old Barn.” “It had the atmosphere like mostSaturday home games when we were here and pretty close to what we had in the playoffs,” Islanders team captain John Tavares said after scoring two goals, including the overtime game-winner, in a 3-2 preseason triumph over Philadelphia. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
