Michele Mirman, president of the Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association is on a mission — to help conquer the income inequality gap that women still face in the legal profession right here in New York City.

“Research came out that women across the country make much less than men, including in New York where we earn 87 cents for every dollar a man earns,” Mirman said. “The question is how do we remedy that?”

A part of that has been a series of financial related continuing legal education (CLE) seminars aimed at helping women to make smart financial decisions. On Monday, BWBA hosted its second such CLE titled “Women & Money: The Road Best Travelled for Financial Well-Being, Navigating the Profession Professionally.”

“Even women who are professionals, lawyers, doctors, CEOs, make less than their male counterparts,” Mirman explained. “We remedy that by teaching ourselves about finance, about making money, about saving money, about going in asking for raises and standing up for ourselves. I don’t think that it’s one thing that causes us to make less money.”

Joseph Tancer and Christine Miller, both certified public accountants and partners at Janover LLC, led the seminar. They covered many various aspects of professional life from things like creating a brand, purchasing insurance and creating a retirement plan.

“The things that people need to know going into the profession in terms of getting their finances straight, which insurances to use and knowing what to offer for employee benefits,” Tancer said. “We also look at things people need to consider when navigating as an employee.

“This is a way to get everyone on board and ready to enter the legal profession,” Miller continued. “It’s a very practical approach at things like making your own brand, how you want to be perceived as a professional.”

BWBA will hold its next CLE on finances on Thursday, Nov. 9 at the Brooklyn Bar Association in Brooklyn Heights. The title of that CLE is “Women & Money — You’ve Earned it, Now What Do You Do With It? Women Building Wealth Through Long-term Investing.”

Prior to that CLE, the BWBA will host a membership party at Borough Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 17.
