~MEDICAID CUTS COULD ‘DECIMATE’ SAFETY NET HOSPITALS IN BKLYN: On Oct. 1, Brooklyn’s public and safety net hospitals could be hit with potentially crippling cuts to Medicaid payments, Gov. Andrew Cuomo warnedon Tuesday. Unless Congress rescinds the scheduled cuts to Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital payments, hospitals across the state serving low-income and uninsured patients could go into financial shock, with Brooklyn’s most vulnerable hospitals like Kings County, Interfaith Medical Center and SUNY Downstate being among the biggest losers. “If they do nothing, if they don’t reach agreement, if they gridlock, this goes into effect in 11 days. And that’s why this is frightening,” Cuomo said. “There is no way” the state could pick up the $2.6 billion cut, he added. This cut comes on top of the separate push by Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~CROWN HEIGHTS BAR OWNER FINALLY PLASTERS OVER BULLET HOLES: After months of backlash, often right to her face, Summerhill bar owner Becca Brennan finally plastered over her “bullet-hole ridden” wall. TheCrown Heights watering hole got attention when it posted a picture of a $12 cocktail in front of a wall with two bullet holes. Local residents showed their opposition, saying that Brennan was capitalizing on the neighborhood’s history of crime and poverty. Although she previously removed the “Forty Ounce Rose” from her menu, up until now she refused to plaster over the holes. For protest organizers Paola Ayala, Jon Villaran and Justine Stephens, Brennan’s decision was reactionary. “She may be able to cover up the holes, but she cannot undo the harm she has already caused,” they said. “In light of this action, the organizers against Summerhill emphasize the boycott against this establishment.” (via Gothamist)

~FAMED IBIZA PARTY LANDS IN BROOKLYN THIS WEEKEND: Renowned Welsh DJ and producer Jamie Jones is bringing his “Paradise” party to New York City for the first time this Saturday. The Ibiza-born bash will be taking place at The Brooklyn Mirage, a massive outdoor music venue in East Williamsburg. The party series is considered one of the best on the White Isle for its excellent lineup of DJs, extravagant decorations and debauchery-filled nights that extend well into the next day. The 12-plus hour affair is one of the final shows at The Brooklyn Mirage this summer. The venue has, after a few hiccups, become a staple of the underground music scene in Brooklyn. And with tropical florae adorning the venue and the party stretching well into the wee hours of the morning, attendees might even feel as though they are on the small Mediterranean island known for its 24-hour parties. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~JUDICIAL PRIMARY VOTERS MAY HAVE BASED DECISIONS ON GENDER: The recently passed Democratic primary elections reportedly had Brooklyn civil court judge voters making decisions based on gender. Only women were voted to the bench on September 12 in an election that had a significantly low turnout. Some legal sources speculate that low-turnout elections steer voters towards women because they think women are more trustworthy and suited for the judge position. “When voters don’t have a lot of information, many default to women, believing – whether correctly or not – that women are outside the dominant power structure,” election lawyer Sarah Steiner said. (via Gotham Gazette)

~PREMATURE EXULTATION IN CONEY ISLAND: Before Wednesday’s match against the San Francisco Deltas, Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savareseimplored his team to get three points, to keep a clean sheet and to build some momentum. With a two-goal lead and a man advantage with 11 minutes left to play, it appeared as though New York had answered Savarese’s plea, but a series of costly mistakes saw the match finish 2-2. “We got a little complacent,” said Savarese after his team dropped points at MCU Park inConey Island. “We were still moving the ball, still creating chances, but I think the thing that was missing was being able to put them down.” He added, “If we were able to capitalize on those chances, they would have given up, but we gave them life. … In the end, it’s more lost points that we had in our hands.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Mathew Barzal came very close to sticking with the New York Islanders after making the Opening Night roster a year ago. This September, the 20-year-old center isn’t leaving any doubt as to whether he’sready to start and, more importantly, finish the upcoming season in Brooklyn with his NHL teammates. Barzal scored for the second time in as many gamesWednesday night during the Islanders’ 3-2, split-squad, overtime loss to Philadelphia in Allentown, Pennsylvania, improving his case for once again cracking head coach Doug Weight’s roster for the Oct. 6 opener at Columbus. The Islanders’ first-round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft also opened some eyes last year, only to see fellow 19-year-old Anthony Beauvillier get the longer look after both made the squad following the preseason. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
