THE LEDE: Happy Tuesday, Brooklyn! Weiner heads to jail, the Kosciuszko Bridge’s demolition gets delayed again, and LinkNYC kiosks are attracting the wrong kind of people. We share a lesser-seen side of the BQE, Jared Kushneris in hot water, and flight attendants share some secrets to flying. Plus, fish can have personalities, a robot dentist performs a dental implant on a Chinese woman, and a pair of Hitler’s underwear sells for $5,500. Go figure.

IMPRINT: Brownstone Brooklyn makes the latest cover of The New Yorker.

~WEEPING IN COURT, WEINER ENDURED ‘SORDID DOWNFALL’: Former Rep. Anthony Weiner was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison for sexting with a 15-year-old girl in a case that rocked Hillary Clinton’scampaign for the White House in the closing days of the race and may have cost her the presidency. Weiner, 53, dropped his head into his hand and wept as the sentence was announced by Judge Denise Cote. After the hearing ended and Cote left the bench, he sat in his seat for several minutes, continuing to cry. He said nothing as he left the courthouse and must surrender to prison officials by Nov. 6. The sentencing completed the sordid downfall of the New York Democrat, whose penchant for exchanging lewd messages and photos with young women online destroyed his career in Congress in 2011, doomed his bid for mayor of New York in 2013, wrecked his marriage to Clinton’s closest aide, Huma Abedin, and became entangled in the 2016 presidential campaign. (AP via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~KOSCIUSZKO BRIDGE DODGES DEMOLITION, STILL STANDS IN PIECES: After a series of on-again, off-again demolition dates, the old span of the Kosciuszko Bridge dodged another date with destruction Sunday after its main span was removed in July. The old span that connected Greenpoint to Queens was supposed to be demolished on Sept. 24, but demolition was delayed for an unknown reason with no new date set in the future, according to the Brooklyn Paper. The dismantled span will meet its final destruction in a series of surgical explosions. The main span of the bridge was lowered over the course of about 16 to 18 hours on July 25 and 26 as part of the $873 million investment to replace the rusted bridge. A large hole in the air will sit next to the bridge’s vibrant replacement for passersby over Newtown Creek to see until the remaining sections of the bridge are removed. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~LITTLE-SEEN VANTAGE POINTS OF THE BQE: Some drivers on the traffic-plagued Brooklyn-Queens Expressway have likely memorized the ins and outs of the highway and its nearby sites, but one photographer took the trek on foot, capturing some not-often seen vistas of the snake-like route. John Michael Kilbane, who was a photography student in Sunset Park, living close to the expressway, wanted to explore the highway through the eyes of those who live underneath and alongside it. His photo compilation shows shots of residential neighborhoods and industrial zones of the city often unseen. “New York is one of the most difficult places to photograph, because so many great photographers have come here before,” Kilbane said. “But the BQE is more untapped; the photos don’t have to carry the weight of history.” (via The New York Times)

~BROOKLYN NATIVE TAPPED BY DE BLASIO TO SAVE NYC’S PUBLIC HOSPITALS: With cutbacks on the city’s public health care system looming, the highly-regarded head of Los Angeles’ public health system, Dr. Mitchell Katz, has been nominated by Mayor Bill De Blasio to run NYC Health + Hospitals. Dr. Katz has been called a visionary, an innovator and a “fundamentally decent man.” The city’s public and safety net hospitals could be hit with potentially crippling cuts to Medicaid payments on Oct. 1. If so, Brooklyn’s HHC hospitals, such as Kings County, would be among the biggest losers. The Republicans’ attack on the Affordable Care Act also threatens the solvency of safety net hospitals. With this in mind, De Blasio is counting on Dr. Katz to preserve health care for poor and working class New Yorkers. Dr. Katz is a native of Brooklyn who will be returning home not only to run the nation’s largest public healthcare system, but to care for his two elderly parents. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~LINKNYC KIOSKS ATTRACT DRUG DEALING: Those tall kiosks that sprout out of the sidewalk providing Wi-Fi and city accessibility services are hot-spots for crime. One LinkNYC kiosk in Greenpoint is reportedly being used by people to schedule drug purchases and to warn others about police presence. Councilman Stephen Levin’s office has received multiple complaints about other kiosks in the neighborhood that have become popular spaces for loitering and drug deals. “I do understand the public good of having these things,” saidAdam Saucy, owner of the nearby Odd Fox Coffee shop. “It’s causing problems that I don’t think people anticipated or were very prepared to deal with.” Loitering complaints did however drop by 96 percent after LinkNYC was forced to disable the wireless browsing capabilities after people were using them to watch pornography. (via DNAinfo)

EAGLE SPORTS: Somehow, someway, the New York Cosmos climbed the standings on Saturday despite losing 2-0 to North Carolina FC, enduring a nine-game winless streak and taking only two points from a three-match homestand. Following the team’s disappointing defeat at MCU Park in Coney Island, New York moved into fourth place in the Combined Standings, albeit provisionally. Fifth-place Jacksonville has a game in hand on the Cosmos, and second-place San Francisco has played two less matches than New York. “We’ve just got to continue to believe,” said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese. “There’s still plenty of games to make it to the playoffs, and I think that’s the most important part right now.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
