~BKLYN COURT TRIES TERRORIST, USES EXPERIENCED PROSECUTORS: With an experienced terrorism prosecution team bringing terrorism cases to Brooklyn’s federal court, prosecutors gave closing statements on Tuesday in the trial of a Houston native and al-Qaeda member accused of helping bomb a U.S. Military base in Afghanistan. “Muhanad Al Farekh sought to kill Americans. It is time to hold him accountable,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Douglas Pravda told jurors. Al Farekh’s fingerprints were found strewn along packing tape used to bind a bomb onto a vehicle that was planned to destroy the U.S. Forward Operating Base Chapman in Khost, Afghanistan in 2009, prosecutors said. In a two-hour closing argument, Pravda went through multiple pieces of evidence that he said tied Al Farekh to the attack, including the prints, handwriting and identification from fellow terrorists. “We ask you to look at the evidence,” Pravda told jurors. “There’s only one conclusion that you can reach.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~COMFORT DOG PROGRAM ENHANCES NYC SCHOOLS: There’s nothing like a cuddle and some furry kisses during a rough day at school. Expanding on last year’s successful pilot program, city schools are bringing in more huggable, tail-wagging “comfort dogs” this year for stressed-out students. Having a dog around seems to calm down kids who may be struggling with issues at school or at home, teachers say. “The Comfort Dog program brings a smile to students and staff on a challenging day, helps to de-escalate issues and can even provide bereavement support,” Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said. There she met a puggle named Bruno, who — though he wore the seemingly serious expression shared by many puggles — happily submitted to hugs and pets from the students. Fariña said that comfort dogs are now helping nearly 40 schools “strengthen their culture and build stronger relationships.” Of the 40 schools, 12 are in Brooklyn. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~TAKE A SEAT ON THE STREET: A new way to take up parking spaces has come to Brooklyn: Street Seats. The citywide program sets up sectioned-off areas in the street closest to the curb and gives people a place to socialize. A popular area in Brownsville showcases a small area filled with tables, chairs and surrounded by low-standing wooden walls that sport small plants on top of them. There are about 17 Street Seats in place from Manhattan to Brooklyn, with some residents fearing them as a new gentrifying force. (via News 12 Brooklyn)

~HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER IN WILLIAMSBURG CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER: A 57-year-old man faces up to 15 years in prison after he was convicted of reckless manslaughter, leaving the scene of an incident and reckless driving for a hit-and-run incident that took the life of a cyclist inWilliamsburg, Acting DA Eric Gonzalez announced on Monday. Juan Maldonado was convicted in connection to the 2016 hit-and-run death of 35-year old Matthew von Ohlen, a bicycle advocate from Queens. “The driver in this case engaged in the types of criminal actions I am determined to prosecute in Brooklyn in order to reduce fatalities on our roads and streets,” Gonzalez said. “The jury has now agreed that this was not an accident but a crime, and this defendant will be held responsible for his reckless behavior that cost an innocent man his life.” (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)

~HEAR BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK: Visitors of Brooklyn Bridge Park can now throw on headphones and listen to stories and comments from past visitors guiding them through the green space. HEAR THEIR THERE HERE is a new appmade by St. Ann’s Warehouse that records visitors in the park responding to their surroundings. The topics of conversation run the gamut from the diversity of birds in the area to how intense it would be to be the Manhattan Bridge. “You get some people with really deep thoughts, and you also get some people who are hilariously themselves, and you get some heartbreaking things, there are some people who are pretty disenfranchised and lost,” said Geoff Sobelle, the app’s creator. “I think what’s cool is, it’s both about people as much as place.” (via Hyperallergic)

EAGLE SPORTS: If you listened closely to what Islanders head coachDoug Weight had to say about rookie Mathew Barzal before Monday night’s 3-0 exhibition victory over New Jersey at Downtown Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, you’d think the 20-year-old center had already wrapped up a spot on the team’s Opening Night roster. “He did have two good camps [in 2015 and 2016], and forced himself to stick around, but he tailed off a bit in both of those and I’ve seen none of that [this year],” Weight said Monday. “He was dynamic with the puck in both of those, we’ve seen more of that this year.” But Barzal, as he has been doing throughout this preseason, left nothing to chance in his pursuit of not only breaking camp with the team, as he did a year ago, but sticking around for the long haul. The Islanders’ first-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft has scored three goals this exhibition campaign. (via the Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
