According to the new guidelines, large items should be placed curbside after 4 p.m. the night before the appointment. Mattresses and box springs should always be placed in a plastic bag before disposal to avoid the spread of bed bugs and a fine ($100). Residents must also make sure that large items can be lifted by two people and fit into a collection truck. For the full guidelines list, visit nyc.gov/dsny.

Also attending the news conference were Community Board 10 Vice Chair Lori Willis, DSNY Deputy Director of Community Engagement John Mancuso and Gentile’s former Chief of Staff Justin Brannan, who is now running for Gentile’s City Council seat.

“We are very fortunate in this neighborhood to have curbside pickup upon request,” said Gentile. “In many areas of the country, people have to take their large bulk items to disposal stations themselves. We now have a process in place that makes it even easier to schedule a curbside pickup.”

Garcia said she was in Bay Ridge at Gentile’s and the community board’s request “to come up with an even better solution for dealing with very large pieces of furniture.”

She added that she believed this would help make the community cleaner and safer going forward.

Gentile called the new program an example of government in action and a response to real concerns.  After hearing complaints from residents in the neighborhood, Gentile said that when he discussed the matter with Garcia, she took immediate action.

“She understood the problems we were having with this issue, not only in our community, but in communities all across the city,” said Gentile. “The commissioner promised us a few months ago that there would be a new procedure in place by September. And here we are in September and the commissioner has come through on her promise.”

Gentile also thanked Brannan for his efforts in seeing the program through, and for having been at the forefront of addressing the issue.

Collections will be made on Monday through Saturday, except on city holidays. In the event of severe weather, collections will be postponed and rescheduled. Appointments may be scheduled up to four weeks in advance.
