~DRASTIC RISE IN FLU ACROSS NEW YORK; HOSPITAL BEDS FILLING UP: Cases of influenza shot up dramatically over the past weeks across New York, and the illness is sending residents to the hospital in record numbers. According to the state Department of Health, cases of influenza across New York rose by 54 percent over the week ending Jan. 13. At least 1,606 infected New Yorkers were hospitalized that week — the highest weekly number since DOH reporting began in 2004. In New York City, more than 520 people with flu-like illnesses visited city emergency departments on Jan. 2, the season’s peak day so far. The largest number of the city’s ER flu visits took place in Brooklyn and Queens, and the largest number of these patients were children up to the age of 4 years old. These high numbers have caused Gov. Andrew Cuomo to direct DOH to help coordinate hospital bed capacity and surge planning, and to ensure that New York has an adequate supply of flu vaccine. Health officials are urging all residents over 6 months of age to get vaccinated as soon as possible — and to wash their hands frequently with soap and hot water. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NEWTOWN CREEK’S HISTORY OF FATAL ACCIDENTS: From condoms and corpses to trash and tires, residents of North Brooklyn are accustomed to seeing unusual objects floating in Newtown Creek. But what one person discovered in the toxic waterway on Friday morning was one of the more extraordinary findings. A vacant car was seen partially submerged in the Brooklyn side of the creek around 6:30 a.m., according to FDNY. The black vehicle appeared to have crashed through a barrier at the end of Maspeth Avenue in East Williamsburg. At press time, the driver’s whereabouts and identification had not been determined. In June 2013, a car crashed into a guardrail at the end of Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint. The vehicle, though it did not make it into the water, hung precariously over the creek. In April 2008, a two-door black Mercedes-Benz drove into the waterway off of Apollo Street in Greenpoint. Going further back, the Eagle reported of a fatal crash in the creek on Jan. 29, 1934. “George Stuke, 27, a bookkeeper at the Chase National Bank’s Harlem Branch, was drowned early yesterday when the car driven by his father, Adolph Stuke, … plunged into Newtown Creek through an open draw of the Penny Bridge between Long Island City and Greenpoint,” the Eagle article read. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~FORMER BROOKLYN HEIGHTS LIBRARY SITE, PIER 6 DEVELOPMENTS MOVE AHEAD: Plans to market two controversial high-rise condo developments — 280 Cadman Plaza West, at the site of the former Brooklyn Heights Library, and one of the two towers at Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park —are underway. Passersby can see construction work proceeding at 280 Cadman Plaza West, developed by Hudson Companies, on a daily basis. The library branch was demolished in April after a bitter struggle in the community. According to The Real Deal, the price for condos will average out to $3.6 million apiece. The site reports that an offering plan filed with the state Attorney General’s Office has a total offering price of $477.7 million. The second project is the Pier 6 development at Brooklyn Bridge Park. Two buildings have been planned for the site, which is near the foot of Atlantic Avenue, and one would include affordable housing units. A “teaser site” is now online for one of the two buildings, the 28-story “Quay Tower,” Curbed reports. Two-bedroom apartments will start at $1.9 million; three-bedrooms will start at $2.9 million; four-bedrooms from $5 million; and five-bedrooms from $5.5 million. All pricing is estimated. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~U.S. REP. YVETTE CLARKE CALLS TRUMP ‘DISGRACE TO OUR NATION’:Anti-immigrant remarks allegedly made by President Donald Trump during a closed-door meeting with a bipartisan group of lawmakers in the White House continue to unleash a firestorm of criticism. U.S. Rep. Yvette Clarke was among the lawmakers denouncing Trump. “Donald Trump is disgrace to the presidency and a disgrace to our nation,” she said bluntly. “It is clear that he is not at all serious about developing constructive and humane policy to fix and mend our broken immigration system, but rather he has taken this opportunity to advance white supremacist ideology through his utterance in and from the White House,” Clarke said. Assemblymember Diana Richardson also spoke out against the president. “The United States was built off of the backs of those who migrated from a wide array of countries,” Richardson said. “The audacity of our country’s leader to refer to other human beings in such a derogatory manner because of where they come from is unpalatable.” Richardson said she hails from a family of immigrants and represents a district that is home to many Haitians and immigrants from African nations. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
