As the Nov. 6 elections approach, New York Democrats have their eyes trained on an unusual swing district: South Brooklyn, where long-serving state senator and lone Republican elected official in the borough Marty Golden is up for re-election.

The democratic party is now going all out in their support for his challenger, democratic nominee Andrew Gounardes, reports The New York Times. Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to hold a fundraiser for Gounardes this week, and the nominee was flanked in an appearance last weekend by both New York attorney general candidate Letitia James and City Council speaker Corey Johnson, both influential New York democrats.

Golden, however, does not appear nervous about losing the seat, according to the TimesDespite the fact that the incumbent senator has appeared in a not-so-flattering light this summer, with what the Times calls a “spotty history on traffic safety,” and the fact that Democrats outnumber Republicans in the district two-to-one, Golden maintains that he doesn’t believe “the blue wave is real” in his community.
