A bookstore in Brooklyn is taking the protests against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh to a whole new level — the supernatural. Catland, a specialty occult bookstore in Bushwick, is hosting an event on Oct. 20 to publicly hex the newest member of the Supreme Court, as well as “all rapists and the patriarchy at large which emboldens them,” according to the event page.

Though the idea is being ridiculed in conservative circles, (all it takes is one look at the Facebook event comment section to be confronted with comments like this one: “What a bunch of disgusting loons. Cat lovers everywhere reject you. Go shave your armpits.”) New Age traditions like Modern Wicca and witchcraft have historic ties to second-wave feminism.

A story from Vox points out that the U.S. has few “socially cohesive rituals or structures by which abuse survivors can experience justice.” The event at Catland offers women a chance to find catharsis, or at least a temporary comfort by being around those with similar experiences.

The event has pledged half the events to charity, to both the Ali Forney Center (which offers support to homeless LGBTQ youth) and Planned Parenthood. However, the shop says no one will be turned away for lack of payment.

“We are embracing witchcraft’s true roots,” the event page says, “as the magik of the poor, the downtrodden and disenfranchised.”
