~BATISTA NAMED BROOKLYN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT:The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has named Hector Batista, the CEO of the nonprofit Big Brothers Big Sisters NYC and a veteran of city government, to serve as its new president and CEO. The chamber’s Board of Directors announced the hiring of Batista on Tuesday. Batista, who starts his new job on Oct. 22, succeeds former chamber president Andrew Hoan who left in May to lead the Portland Business Alliance. Batista is the first Hispanic to serve as president in the chamber’s 100-year history. The chamber, which has more than 2,000 members, was founded in 1918. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BLOOMBERG’S NEW HAMPSHIRE EVENT FUELS WHITE HOUSE BID TALK: A quick stop by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Saturday in the state that holds the first primary in the race for the White House is sparking more speculation about a possible White House bid by the billionaire media company founder and gun safety advocate. Bloomberg was the main attraction at the get-out-the-vote rally for six candidates running for New Hampshire’s state House of Representatives. Bloomberg’s trip came just days after he re-registered as a Democrat after years as a Republican and an independent. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~NYC REPORTS NO SHOOTINGS FOR ENTIRE WEEKEND: Not one person was shot in New York City over the weekend, the first time that’s happened since 1993. Officials said Monday there were no shootings with victims reported in the five boroughs for all of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The last shooting before the weekend was on Thursday morning in Brooklyn when a 25-year-old man was shot in the stomach. The gunfire free record was broken Monday afternoon when a man was shot in the Bronx. He is expected to survive. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN DUO PAYS HOMAGE TO CHILDHOOD PASTIME, THE BLANKET FORT: At some point growing up, most of us threw a blanket over two chairs and declared it our clubhouse. ~BROOKLYN DIOCESE HIRES PRIEST DESPITE ACCUSATIONS OF CHILD SEX ABUSE: It wasn’t until after their priest returned to his native Colombia that Brooklyn and Queens parishioners learned that the Rev.Roberto Cadavid had a long history of sexual abuse. The Diocese of Brooklyn hired Cadavid in 2012, “[bypassing] its own safety protocols,” according to Gothamist. Cadavid returned to his homeland in the summer of 2017 because Colombian children were speaking out against him. At least four boys had already come forward about the abuse they suffered while he served as the director of their school. (Gothamist via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~AS HOMELESSNESS CONTINUES TO GROW, DE BLASIO REFUSES TO ENGAGE WITH ACTIVIST ON ISSUE: When an activist recently confronted Mayor Bill de Blasio during his morning workout at the Park Slope YMCA about affordable housing, the mayor refused to respond. Nathylin Flowers Adesegun asked why only 15,000 of the prospective 300,000 affordable housing units are for those with no place to live, which brought to light the ways the city is mishandling homelessness, according to The New York Times. Many are criticizing the mayor’s strategy for combating the problem, citing that only 16 of the proposed 40 new shelters that were slated to open this year are up and running. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)
