~MEASLES OUTBREAK IN ORTHODOX WILLIAMSBURG STEMS FROM UNVACCINATED CHILDREN: Health Department officials met with rabbis and elected officials in Williamsburg on Thursday after six children in the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community were diagnosed with measles. Five of them were unvaccinated, and one had received one dose of the vaccine prior to exposure but was not yet immune. The initial Brooklyn case was acquired by a child on a visit to Israel, where a large outbreak is currently happening. Many ultra-Orthodox parents resist vaccinating their children. If one person catches measles, 90 percent of that person’s non-immunized close contacts will also become infected, the Health Department said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~COME STROLL DOWN RIDGE BOULEVARD: From highway to harbor, Ridge Boulevard is a fine street for a stroll. Take a walk down this boulevard, and you’ll see a representative slice of Bay Ridge’s housing stock. There are massive old mansions, modest modern rowhouses and numerous options in between those two extremes. There are classic mid-rise apartment buildings, too. As a bonus, you’ll encounter historic churches and schools. We decided toshow you Ridge Boulevard because over the years, we’ve devoted lots of attention to glam Shore Road, quirky cul-de-sacs and other eye-catching parts of the neighborhood. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~JUSTICE DENIED FOR BROOKLYN MAN VICIOUSLY BEATEN, LOST VISION IN EYE & HIS ACCUSER: An Orthodox Jewish man who was cleared by a higher court for the gang assault against a gay black man believes a“corrupt” criminal justice system denied both him and the victim justice. A week after the Second Department Appellate Division tossed Mayer Herskovic’s gang assault conviction, Brooklyn prosecutors announced on Thursday that they are unable to fight their decision. “The prosecutor’s office is not allowed to appeal … it’ll be double jeopardy,” said Donna Aldea, the appellate attorney for Herskovic. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BODY FOUND FLOATING IN THE WATER IN BATH BEACH, SECOND IN ONE MONTH: Police discovered a body in the waters near Bay Eighth Street and Shore Parkway in Bath Beach on Thursday morning. According to authorities, cops responded to a 911 call at about 9:48 a.m. of a male in the water within the confines of the 62nd Precinct. NYPD Harbor personnel responded and removed the body from the water, after which emergency medical services on scene pronounced the man dead. This is the second time a body has washed up near Bay Eighth street in just over a month. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MOVIEPASS OPERATIONS UNDER INVESTIGATION BY NEW YORK AG:The company that runs the beleaguered MoviePass discount service for theater tickets is being investigated by the New York Attorney General on allegations that it misled investors. Parent company Helios and Matheson of New York said it is aware of the investigation, but that it believes, “our public disclosures have been complete, timely and truthful and we have not misled investors.” Helios and Matheson has struggled financially and is facing class action lawsuits filed on behalf of investors claiming the company failed to disclose aspects of a business model that were unsustainable. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~PARK SLOPE’S NEWEST TOURIST ATTRACTION: JIMMY KIMMEL’S AIRBNB: If John Krasinski is known for one thing, it’s the pranks he pulled off as Jim Halpert in “The Office.” Now, the actor is taking a little inspiration from his character. During Jimmy Kimmel’s live taping in Brooklyn, Krasinski unveiled a series of pranks he and Kimmel have been playing on each other. Krasinski turned Kimmel’s Airbnb in Park Slope into a full-on tourist attraction, complete with sign-spinners with “KIMMEL” cardboard cutout arrows and a gospel choir singing on the stoop. Plastered across the top floor was a giant banner reading “Welcome Jimmy Kimmel, Who Is Renting This House!” (Time via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BEDBUGS FIND HAVEN IN BROOKLYN, ESPECIALLY FLATBUSH, SAYS SURVEY: Brooklyn has consistently had the second largest number of bed bug violations per rental apartment in the five boroughs, behind only the Bronx, according to an analysis by Localize. The most bed bug-prone neighborhood in Brooklyn — and the entire city — is Flatbush, with 18 violations per 1,000 rental households during the five-year period ending in August. The second isProspect-Lefferts Gardens, with 16 violations for each 1,000 rental apartments. Bed bugs don’t carry diseases, but their bites are annoying and can get easily infected. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)

~OVERFLOWING TRASH PLAGUES CARROLL GARDENS’ STREETS: Trash is everywhere in Carroll Gardens, from litter on the streets to overflowing garbage cans, and people are complaining. Katia Kelly, author of the blog Pardon Me for Asking, said that when she moved into the then-working class neighborhood in 1985, “many residents regularly swept in front of their homes and kept an eye on those who did not.” Today, some brownstones sell for millions, but from candy wrappers to plastic bags to paper cups, trash is everywhere. Rats, attracted by the garbage, also plague the neighborhood.(PMFA via Brooklyn Eagle)

EAGLE SPORTS: Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson spent most of the summer indicating that he was growing a bit weary of his team getting credit for playing hard until the final buzzer, only to lose. “You accept and are gracious when people say your team plays hard and they play together,” said Atkinson. “I also think that sometimes, a lot of times, especially toward the end of the year, it puts a chip on your shoulder,” he added. “We’ve got to get over the hump. It’s just not enough.” It wasn’t enough in loss No. 117 of the Atkinson era either as Brooklyn suffered a deflating 103-100 defeat to the Pistons. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
