Brooklyn postal worker charged with stealing money from homeless
A postal worker has been charged with stealing checks from mailboxes on her Brooklyn route, including checks meant for residents of a homeless shelter.
Vanessa Bandie, 29, teamed up with three other co-defendants, according to the Daily News, and together the group allegedly carried out a Grinch-esque scheme over the holiday season of 2016, stealing almost $30,000 between late October and late December.
At the suggestion of James Black, resident of East New York, Bandie and co-defendant Lauren Johnson, 27, would identify envelopes that appeared to contain checks, such as mail coming from the New York City Human Resources Administration, the Daily News reported. Then, they would pass the checks off to Paul Daniels, 30, an employee at the Pay-O-Matic on Linden Boulevard who would cash the checks, according to Brooklyn D.A. Eric Gonzalez.
