A Brooklyn judge convicted a Coney Island father for brutally beating his infant daughter to death during a visit on Father’s Day.

Little Nylah Lewis was dropped off by her mother to Shaquan Taylor’s West 32nd Street apartment on June 18, 2017. A short while later, Taylor texted Nylah’s mother that the baby was having trouble breathing.

Prosecutors said that when the mother arrived at the apartment, their daughter was unconscious with bruises, cuts and swelling on her face.

“On a day when the importance of fathers is celebrated, this defendant committed an unforgivable crime against his own child. Instead of protecting and nurturing his daughter, the defendant caused the injuries that tragically ended her short life,” said Brooklyn DA Eric Gonzalez in a statement issued on Thursday.

As the mother took their baby out of the apartment to call police for assistance, Taylor began beating the woman. She handed the baby to a passerby as Taylor continued to beat her until he fled the scene. Nylah was in a coma for five days and died from skull fracture injuries on June 23, 2017.

Following a jury trial on Wednesday, Taylor was convicted of second-degree murder. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison when sentenced by Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Vincent Del Giudice on Nov. 7.
