There were 249 episodes of the series, which was set in rural Mayberry, North Carolina, and starred Griffith as Sheriff Andy Taylor; Ron Howard as his son, Opie; Frances Bavier as Aunt Bee Taylor; and Don Knotts as Deputy Barney Fife. The last episode aired on Sept. 16, 1968.

HARVEY KURTZMAN WAS BORN ON THIS DAY IN 1902. The cartoonist and founder of Mad magazine was born in Brooklyn. At 14, he had his first cartoon published, and he began his career in comic books in 1943. His career led him to EC (Educational Comics), and with the support of William Gaines, he created Mad, which first appeared in 1952. He died in 1993 in Mount Vernon.

THE FIRST FEMALE SENATOR WAS APPOINTED ON THIS DAY IN 1922. On this date Sen. W.H. (Rebecca) Felton of Cartersville, GA, was appointed by Governor Thomas Hardwick of Georgia to the Senate seat vacated by the death of Thomas E. Watson. It was a two-day ad interim appointment.

EAST AND WEST GERMANY REUNITED ON THIS DAY IN 1990. After 45 years of division, East and West Germany reunited just four days short of East Germany’s 41st founding anniversary (Oct 7, 1949). The new united Germany took the name the Federal Republic of Germany, the formal name of the former West Germany, and adopted the constitution of the former West Germany.
