~BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK CONSERVANCY RAISES OVER $1 MILLION AT ANNUAL BALL: Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy hosted its sixth annual Brooklyn Black Tie Ball on Pier 2 of the park Thursday, raising $1.27 millionand honoring two people who have contributed to the waterfront greenery. Proceeds from the ball directly supported the conservancy’s over 500 free and low-cost activities. “Please accept our gratitude for helping us bring environmental education, artistic cultural programs and active recreation to more than 140,000 kids and families throughout New York City,” Mark Baker, the conservancy board’s chairman, said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~FRAUD-IAN SLIP: BROOKLYN THERAPIST BUSTED FOR PHONY BILLING: A Brooklyn therapist was among eight mental healthcare providers charged with massive Medicaid fraud in federal court for the Eastern District of New York on Wednesday. Brooklyn resident Lyubov Beylina, 30, is charged with defrauding Medicaid and the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for more than $600,000 by submitting false bills. Allegedly, she submitted approximately 51 fraudulent invoices for therapy sessions while on vacation in the Dominican Republic. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~DAVE ANDERSON, EAGLE SPORTS COLUMNIST, PULITZER WINNER, DIES AT 89: Dave Anderson, a genteel sports writer whose elegant, descriptive prose won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary as a columnist for The New York Times, died Thursday. He was 89. He worked at the newspaper from 1966 to 2007. A few months after his college graduation in 1951, he became a clerk for the Brooklyn Eagle and started covering baseball the following year, when he was assigned card No. 457 by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. ~NEW DUMPLING HOUSE OPENS IN BOERUM HILL: A new Chinese dumpling house called Oh! Dumpling is now open at 6 Bergen St. in Boerum Hill. The eatery, which opened in August, serves bing (crepe-style sandwiches), mo (Chinese Burgers), handmade burgers and salads. The dumplings are either boiled or pan-fried and filled with beef, pork, chicken, shrimp or vegetables. Space is limited: Oh! Dumpling can accommodate only three or four guests at a small counter. (Pardon Me For Asking via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~HOME SALES UP IN BROOKLYN, REPORT ATTRIBUTES IT TO CO-OP TRANSACTIONS: In the second quarter of this year, the median price for Brooklyn residences dropped 8 percent from the year-on-year amount to $687,000. A Corcoran report attributed this to unusually high prices last year. However, the borough saw an increase in sales. During the same quarter, Brooklyn registered 1,620 transactions, up 5 percent from the previous year. Co-op sales accounted for most of the deals in the borough. Brooklyn Heights–Cobble Hill-DUMBO–Downtown Brooklyn led the borough with 195 sales and a median sales price of $997,000. (Curbed via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~THOUSANDS OF PERSONAL SKETCHBOOKS ON DISPLAY AT BROOKLYN ART LIBRARY: The Brooklyn Art Lobby in Williamsburg has opened an exhibit known as “The Sketchbook Project,” which includes thousands of sketchbooks from 135 countries. For years, hobbyists have carried sketchbooks with them, drawing whatever they saw as interesting. Since the digital age began, however, many of these sketchbooks have been gathering dust. Steven Peterman, founder of the museum, began the collection 10 years ago. “It’s not that everyone is an artist, but everyone has the urge to be creative,” he said. (Voice of America via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~TRANSIT MUSEUM’S VINTAGE BUS FESTIVAL COMES TO BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK: The New York Transit Museum held its 25th annual vintage bus festival on Sunday. The buses on display represented about 80 years of surface transit history. The oldest bus at the festival, Bus 1263, was a double-decker bus that was purchased by the Fifth Avenue Bus Company in 1930. Other buses of note included Bus 3100, manufactured in 1956 and one of the first air-conditioned buses to go into service; and Bus 2185, which was parked near the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and was badly damaged by falling debris. (Curbed via Brooklyn Eagle)
