~FRONTUS TO BE SWORN IN TODAY, TO START IMMEDIATELY: By the end of the week, residents in Bay Ridge and Coney Island who’ve been without an assemblymember since the spring will have a new representativein the state Assembly. Democrat Mathylde Frontus, who won the seat on Nov. 6, will be sworn in today and she’ll be given the keys to the existing old Assembly office in Coney Island at the same time, with the goal of opening it up immediately. The 46th Assembly District has been unrepresented since the resignation of former Assemblymember Pamela Harris, who stepped down in the wake of an 11-count indictment on a slew of corruption charges. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~AFTER DECADES OF SEPARATION, MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS REUNITE WITH LOVED ONES: In front of hundreds, Caritina Hernandez Maldonado, an immigrant who left her home state of Puebla, Mexico, 13 years ago, merged in a long-drawn welcome embrace with her mother Sofia Maldonado Perezafter decades of separation. Tearful reunions like this spread through Brooklyn Borough Hall on Tuesday during “Roots of Puebla,” a family reunification program that brought parents and grandparents from Puebla to visit their children and grandchildren in the Tri-State Area. “I feel so happy,” Hernandez said in Spanish. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~OFFICIALS VOW TO TAME DYKER HEIGHTS CHRISTMAS LIGHTS EXTRAVAGANZA: The Dyker Heights Christmas Lights, a holiday season treat that draws thousands of tourists to the community and causes headaches for homeowners who have to deal with traffic-clogged streets, piles of litter and deafening versions of “Jingle Bell Rock” for weeks on end, will come understricter supervision this year. “We don’t want to be Scrooge or the Grinch, but we’re trying to get a delicate balance,” Deputy Police Chief Charles Schollof Patrol Borough Brooklyn South said. Scholl said cops are “formulating a plan” that will be “aggressive in nature” to ensure that traffic moves along so that public safety can be maintained. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~WALK WITH US FROM CONEY ISLAND TO SHEEPSHEAD BAY: We’re suffering from seaside withdrawal pangs. The only way for us to alleviate them is to scour the weather reports and find a sunny day for a good long walk. Blue skies bring a strong measure of charm to the Coney Island Boardwalk even when the weather’s chilly. We miss the Sheepshead Bay shoreline too. The offbeat allure of Emmons Avenue sticks in our mind long after summer has fled. The other day when we were pining for surf, sand and seagulls, we decided to see the Coney Island and Sheepshead Bay shorelines during asingle stroll. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~JUDGE ADMONISHES EL CHAPO’S LAWYER FOR OPENING STATEMENT: A federal judge admonished the lawyer for Mexican drug smuggler El Chapo on Wednesday after an opening statement that riled Mexican presidents by accusing them of taking bribes. Federal prosecutors had asked U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan to throw out the defense’s opening statement at the New York trial of Joaquin Guzman, saying it was “permeated with improper argument, unnoticed affirmative defenses and inadmissible hearsay.” (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~NEW MANHATTAN TOWERS COULD DESTROY DUMBO’S PERFECT VIEW: Newlyweds and tourists from around the world often travel to the corner of Washington and Water streets in DUMBO to take photos of the intersection’s iconic view of the Empire State Building in between the Manhattan Bridge. But that scene could be jeopardized by developer’s plans to build four high-rises, ranging from 62 to 80 stories each, on the bank of the East River in Manhattan. Lower Manhattan residents have been protesting the builders’ plans for month. Now, DUMBO residents are joining in as well.(Brooklyn Paper via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~AT MISI IN WILLIAMSBURG, THE VEGGIES ARE AS GOOD AS THE PASTA: It’s wrong to call Misi, a new restaurant across the street from the Domino Sugar refinery on the Williamsburg waterfront, a pasta restaurant, according to The New York Times. The reason is that Misi’s vegetable offerings, mostly categorized as antipasto, are “equally impressive” to the other dishes. Examples include roasted eggplant dressed with chiles and lemon juice; chanterelle mushrooms lightly pickled and preserved in olive oil; and green beans with garlic and chiles. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~ROBERTA’S OPENS NEW BRANCH IN CALIFORNIA: Roberta’s, a well-known pizza restaurant at 261 Moore St. in Bushwick, has now opened a branch in Culver City, a small California city near Los Angeles. Roberta’s first opened in 2008, a time when Bushwick was “the boonies,” according to Robb Report, a luxury lifestyle website. At the same time, the city’s economy was reeling from the real estate crash. Thus, many of Roberta’s signature characteristics began as moves to save money, chef and co-founder Carlo Mirarchi said. (Robb Report via Brooklyn Eagle)
