The epidemic of anti-Semitic incidents in the wake of the Pittsburgh tragedy continued when a political event at the Union Temple in Prospect Heights was canceled Thursday night after anti-Semitic graffiti was found inside the temple.

The graffiti included “Die Jew Rats,” “Jews Better Be Ready” and “Hitler,” according to Channel 4 New York News. The event, which was canceled after the graffiti was discovered, was scheduled to feature comedienne Ilana Glazer as moderator; Democratic state Senate candidates Andrew Gounardes (Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) and Jim Gaughran (Huntington-Oyster Bay); and radio-TV journalist Amy Goodman.

Brooklyn neighborhoods have increasingly been the targets of anti-Semitic attacks in recent weeks, Channel 4 New York News reported. Last month, a man was charged with assault as a hate crime after the beating of a Jewish man in Borough Park, and earlier last week swastikas were found on buildings on a Brooklyn Heights street.

“Hate speech and anti-Semitic graffiti have no place in New York state,” Gounardes said. “I am outraged that cowards would make threats and deface property to spread their hate.”

The Union Temple of Brooklyn, a stone’s throw from Grand Army Plaza, was founded in 1921 as a merger between two historic German-Jewish Reform congregations.
