The Brooklyn Historical Society raised $590,000 at its annual Fall Gala on Monday night, and donations are still rolling in. This year’s gala, the third of its kind, was held at The Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook.

The proceeds this year will go toward funding the Muslims in Brooklyn oral history project and education-based programming at BHS, including the Teen Innovators program BHS has developed in collaboration with the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The gala’s honoree was Cristopher O. Ward, an expert in urban infrastructure who, during his 30-plus-year career in infrastructure and government, led the World Trade Center rebuilding effort at the Port Authority of NY and NJ.

BHS President Deborah Schwartz also recognized Tracy Cook-Person, an educator and poet who spearheaded the Teen Innovators Program and has spent over a decade working in the public school system.

Notable Brooklynites in attendance included Councilmembers Jumaane Williams and Laurie Cumbo, Chief Administrative Officer of Brooklyn Navy Yard Jocelynne Rainey, Vice Chairwoman of the Board of Brooklyn Bridge Park Joanne Witty and President of Brooklyn Bridge Park Corporation Eric Landau.
