The Rundown

~GOLDEN CONCEDES, GOUNARDES OFFICIALLY BECOMES STATE SENATOR-ELECT: One of the most closely watched races in New York state came to an end Monday morning as incumbent Republican state Sen. Marty Golden conceded the contest to Democratic challenger Andrew Gounardes. The concession in Southwest Brooklyn’s 22nd Senate District comes nearly two weeks after Election Day. “As the Board of Elections completes its final count of this year’s close election, I congratulate Andrew Gounardes and wish him well in his service to the people of the 22nd state Senate District,” Golden said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BINGE DRINKING, CHLAMYDIA AND COLONOSCOPIES: NEW WEB PORTAL TELLS ON NEW YORKERS: The neighborhoods of Brighton Beachand Coney Island have the highest death rate in New York City. There are 11.4 deaths per thousand residents in this area, versus the New York City average of 6.3. This is just some of the information available through a newweb portal, data2gohealth, that shines a light on the health of NYC’s neighborhoods. The portal also provide insights for locals curious about their neighbor’s health. “What surprises me is the high rates of chlamydia all over the city. It’s really gone up,” said Rebecca Gluskin, Ph.D., deputy director and chief statistician for Measure of America. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MYSTERIOUS BAY RIDGE ‘BING’ ATTRIBUTED TO VERIZON-SANCTIONED LIFTBOAT: The illusive Bay Ridge “bing” may be a mystery no more. A three-legged liftboat spotted over the weekend in the waters near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge is the cause of the sound heard ‘round the hood, Councilmember Justin Brannan said. The noise — described by local residents as an ominous “bing” which mirrored the sound of “metal on metal” — became a hot topic on social media when Brannan, earlier this month, asked community members if they’d also heard the “mysterious bing.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~AFTER MONTHS OF CONFLICT, DE BLASIO FIRES EMBATTLED WATCHDOG: Mayor Bill de Blasio fired New York City’s chief watchdog, citing an independent report that accused him of “deliberately misleading statements” and abusive behavior. Department of Investigation CommissionerMark G. Peters said Friday he’ll respond in writing before his firing takes effect in three business days. Peters says serving as commissioner of the department that investigates city agencies and departments has been the greatest professional honor of his life. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN RAPPER 6IX9INE INDICTED ON RACKETEERING CHARGES: The rapper known as Tekashi 6ix9ine was in federal custodyMonday awaiting a Manhattan court appearance. The Brooklyn-based rapper, whose legal name is Daniel Hernandez, was among four people arrested on racketeering and firearms charges. The authorities also arrested three of Hernandez’s former associates, Kifano “Shotti” JordanJensel “Ish” Butlerand Faheem “Crippy” Walter(AP via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BRANNAN CALLED DRIVING FORCE BEHIND BAY RIDGE BLUE WAVE:Some observers are crediting Councilmember Justin Brannan, who was a member of two rock bands before he entered politics, as the driving forcebehind the recent Democratic electoral surge in Bay Ridge. Brannan started the Bay Ridge Democrats political club in 2010, “a time when no one thought the area would go blue.” Brannan is also credited as being key in getting labor union support for Democratic candidates. Earlier this month at the polls, Democrat Max Rose ousted Republican U.S. Rep. Dan Donovan, and Democrat Andrew Gounardes ousted longtime Republican State Sen. Marty Golden(New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)

~INDUSTRIAL ZONING PLAN WILL ENCOURAGE TALLER BUILDINGS IN NORTH BROOKLYN: The city’s Department of City Planning is scheduled to release a plan to encourage taller commercial buildings in its North Brooklyn Industrial Business Zone, which stretches from Greenpoint to Bushwickalong Newtown Creek. The city’s draft report would allow slightly taller, denser buildings and dramatically reduce parking requirements for new and expanded buildings. The area has been home to heavy manufacturing for many years, but light-industrial tenants such as 3D printing services, film studios and furniture makers have been moving to the area in recent years. (Commercial Observer via Brooklyn Eagle)

~THE HOXTON CATERS TO WILLIAMSBURG’S TRENDY YOUNGER CLIENTELE: The Hoxton, a new hotel at 97 Wythe Ave. in Williamsburg, is a fashionable venue for “Generation Laptop,” basically meaning twenty-somethings who are digitally connected most of the time, according to The New York Times. The hotel is a short walk from McCarren Park, the Museum of Food and Drink and the Music Hall of Williamsburg. However, the Hoxton is not cheap. A room for two people costs $350 for a Sunday night of a holiday weekend. (NYT via Brooklyn Eagle)
