~WATCHTOWER SIGN ON OLD JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES’ HEADQUARTERS CAN BE REPLACED: The void in the Brooklyn waterfront’s skyline that the Watchtower sign left behind can now be filled. The city Board of Standards and Appeals voted unanimously Thursday to allow the new owner of the old Jehovah’s Witnesses’ headquarters in Brooklyn Heights to replace the internationally famous red electric sign. Workers had removed it from the rooftop in December. Board members cast their votes without expressing their reasons for deciding to allow the iconic sign at 30 Columbia Heights to be replaced. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN TO ASSERT ITSELF IN NEW DEMOCRATIC HOUSE: Brooklyn is going to have a seat at the table when important decisions are made in the new Democratic-controlled House, with one lawmaker taking the helm of one of the important committees in Congress and another setting his sights on an influential party post. In the wake of the Nov. 6 election, U.S. Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Hakeem Jeffries are likely to see their public profiles increase dramatically. Nadler will become the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. Jeffries announced on Thursday that he intends to run for House Democratic Caucus Chair. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~NEWLY ELECTED STATE SENATOR JULIA SALAZAR DISCUSSES RENT REGULATION, HEALTHCARE: As the neighborhoods of North Brooklyn continue to change, so do their politicians. In September’s Democratic primary election, Julia Salazar, a first-time candidate, defeated the eight-term incumbent Senator Martin Malavé Dilan to become the Democratic nominee for the 18th district in 2018. Salazar then advanced to November’s general election, which she won after running unopposed. The Brooklyn Eagle recentlyspoke with the newly elected 27-year-old state Senator. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~JUDGE RULES THAT EL CHAPO CANNOT HUG HIS WIFE AT TRIAL: It’s been about two years since El Chapo has hugged his wife and he’s going tohave to wait at least until his trial is over — if he’s ever going to be able to again. Attorneys for Joaquin Guzman, who pleaded not guilty to charges that he oversaw a violent drug cartel, asked U.S. District Court Judge Brian Coganto grant the alleged kingpin a “humanitarian gesture” of letting Guzman hug his wife. A letter from the defense attorney argued that, “an embrace with the railing between them would not pose a threat to security.” Judge Cogan did not buy this argument and officially denied the motion on Thursday. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~SON TAKEN TO PSYCH WARD AFTER ALLEGEDLY STABBING AND KILLING MOTHER, 91: After a 91-year-old woman was found dead inside herGravesend home on Wednesday, the victim’s son was taken into custody by cops and taken for psychological evaluation. Police received a call to a 26th Avenue address where a relative of Petrina Masotto had reported an assault. When officers arrived at the scene, Masotto was found unconscious. Masotto’s 55-year-old son was taken into custody and transported to Coney Island Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, police said. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~SCHNEIDERMAN WON’T FACE ABUSE CHARGES: The prosecutor appointed to investigate allegations that former New York Attorney GeneralEric Schneiderman physically abused women says she has closed the casewithout bringing criminal charges. Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced her decision Thursday. She said in a brief statement that investigators did an “exhaustive review” and she personally interviewed each woman who had accused Schneiderman of assault. (AP via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~FLATBUSH MAN KILLED INSIDE CITY POINT SHOPPING CENTER: A 25-year-old man was shot dead inside The City Point Shopping Center on Wednesday night. Carlton Spencer was shot in the chest inside the Target on the second floor of the busy Downtown Brooklyn shopping hub located at 445 Albee Square West. Spencer, 25 of Flatbush, was allegedly a part of a group of other men in their 20s and armed with a machete chasing after a 44-year-old man. When the pack got to the Target the older man allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Spencer. (New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BREAD AND PASTRY MANUFACTURER TO MOVE TO NEW WILLIAMSBURG COMMERCIAL BUILDING: Native Bread and Pastry, a 33-year-old pastry and bread manufacturer, is moving from Williamsburg to an office and industrial project under construction in East Williamsburg. The project, known as The Breeze, is located at 315 Meserole St. and is being developed by Hudson Companies. The bakery’s ground-floor space will include both production operations and a small retail cafe bakery. (Commercial Observer via Brooklyn Eagle)
