THE LEDE: Happy Thursday, Brooklyn! Two Trees sets its sights on Gowanus, we snap some Instagram-worthy photos in Coney Island, and many of New York’s roads and bridges are “structurally deficient.” Plus, a Red Hook staple closes, a killer whale learns how to speak, and a 6.1-magnitude earthquake hits Afghanistan and Pakistan. Finally, a train containing Republican members of Congress collides with a truck, France is facing a “new form of anti-Semitism,” and American prosecutors issue subpoenas for information on FIFA, the International Olympic Committee and the United States Olympic Committee.

~TWO TREES’ IMPACT MAY COME TO A NEW COASTLINE, GOWANUS:Two Trees Management, the development company noted for having createdDUMBO, as well as iconic waterfront amenities like Jane’s Carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park and a new waterfront park at the Domino site in Williamsburgmay someday bring their magic to another coast: the Gowanus Canal. According to reports in Crain’s New York Business, Two Trees is in the process of buying two contiguous commercial sites in Gowanus for more than $100 million. The properties include a former Pathmark and a Lowe’s Home Improvement store along the Gowanus Canal, and both include parking lots. The sites are zoned for industrial business uses, and no immediate dramatic changes are expected. Re-zoning for residential uses would require the sites to go through the city’s demanding Uniform Land Use Review Procedure. According to Crain’s, Two Trees is buying the 70,000-square-foot Pathmark site, with its 100,000-square-foot parking lot, for around $65 million. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~SEE THE WONDER WHEEL AND OTHER CONEY ISLAND ICONS DURING A WINTER THAW: Mark your calendars, Brooklynites. The Wonder Wheel starts spinning again on March 25. That’s when Palm Sunday falls this year — which, as tradition dictates, is the opening date for Coney Island’samusement-park rides after they take a late-autumn and winter hiatus. The iconic Ferris wheel’s fans can’t wait. We saw several of them the other day on the boardwalk, snapping photos of the Wonder Wheel through a locked fence. We took some pictures, too, of course. The 150-foot-tall Ferris wheel, which opened in 1920, is an individual city landmark. The Instagram-worthy ride belongs to the Vourderis family, who meticulously repaired it after it was damaged by Superstorm Sandy. Their website says that more than 40 million people have ridden on the Wonder Wheel. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MULTIPLE BROOKLYN BRIDGES DEEMED ‘STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT’: New data shows that 1,837 bridges and elevated roadways in New York State are “structurally deficient,” including multiple Brooklyn overpasses. The recently rehabilitated Brooklyn Bridge made the list alongside the Belt Parkway, Gowanus Expressway and the since-demolished Kosciuszko Bridge, which landed in the top 10. The report “underscores the need for investment in our nation’s infrastructure,” a spokesman from the Federal Highway Administration said. “It also highlights the importance of streamlining the permitting process, so that the projects that are funded can move forward without undue delay.” Nationwide, New York ranked 10th for the most structurally deficient bridges, although the numbers are on an upward trend.(via amNewYork)

~RED HOOK BAIT AND TACKLE BAR SAYS FAREWELL: Beloved bar Red Hook Bait and Tackle recently closed out its 14-year history with a rocking party that raged well into the next morning. The bar embraced its close family of regulars in its last hoorah with a chili cook-off, concert, auction and of course, alcohol. The bar’s owner, Barry O’Meara closed up shop because of the area’s “different financial demographics.” Red Hook was recently named the borough’s priciest neighborhood. The winner of the cook-off Robin Chamberlain had a few words to say about those changes. “The closing will have so many ripple effects on the community. It’s a place where everyone around here sees each other,” Chamberlain said. The party finally winded down around 5:45 a.m. when bartenders yelled for the last stragglers to leave. (via Bedford Bowery)

EAGLE SPORTS: The Nets are in the same division as the archrival New York Knicks. But during this season, they weren’t in the same league. “They’re better than us right now,” Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson conceded following Tuesday night’s 111-95 loss to New York in front of a crowd of 19,505 at Madison Square Garden. “It’s great motivation for us. When we look at the scores for the season, they’re just better than us right now. We got a lot of catching up to do.” The numbers will back that up. En route to suffering their season high-tying fourth consecutive loss, the slumping Nets (18-33) also endured their first season series sweep at the hands of the Knicks (23-28) since the 2010-11 campaign, when the franchise was still based in New Jersey. Making matters worse, Brooklyn lost the four regular-season matchups by an average of 14.7 points. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
