THE LEDE: Happy Thursday, Brooklyn! A new Spanish-inspired cafe opens inRed Hook, a Brooklyn judge has some stern words for parents, and we take a tour of Ocean Hill. Plus, Brooklyn has the most car break-ins in the city, a prancing elk causes a helicopter to crash in Salt Lake City, and a Hawaii-bound flight makes an emergency landing after the plane’s engine falls apart mid-flight. ~FINE SIGHTS TO SEE IN OCEAN HILL: Ocean Hill is a small, beautiful eastern Brooklyn neighborhood. The easiest way to locate it on a map is to look for Broadway Junction, the heavily-trafficked subway station at the edge of the neighborhood. Traditionally, Ocean Hill was considered part of Brownsville. These days, some real estate brokers will tell you Ocean Hill is part ofBedford-Stuyvesant. The historical notion that it’s part of Brownsville makes more sense to us. We spent a couple days walking around Ocean Hill and loved so many of the blocks we saw. Painted brick rowhouses are eye pleasers on many streets including Pacific Street, Bergen Street and Prospect Place. Classic three-story brick rowhouses can be found on St. Marks Place. We were especially charmed by Herkimer Street, which is lined with clusters of old-fashioned brick rowhouses and dotted with historic church buildings. Barrel-shaped brick rowhouses on Dewey Place are eye-pleasers too. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~JUDGE PUTS BLAME ON PARENTS AT TEEN GANG MEMBER SENTENCING: In sentencing a teenage gang member to 15 years in prison for a shootout that killed a 16-year-old, a Brooklyn judge on Tuesday pointed his finger at parents for not preventing gang violence. At the sentencing forTyshawn Simon-Robertson, three of the family members of his victim,Armani Hankins, a teen who was shot to death in a 2015 shootout in Fort Greene, testified before the judge. “Children running around the streets of Brooklyn, carrying firearms, it’s a disgrace, it’s a disgrace,” Supreme Court Justice Vincent Del Giudice said. “There’s no good reason for this.” Del Giudice called the borough’s fight with gang violence a “sorry state of affairs,” and said adults in the community needed to help to prevent the issue. Simon-Roberson, 18, was convicted with Malik Peters, 19, of first-degree manslaughter, attempted assault and weapon possession in two separate jury trials for shooting a man and killing Hankins. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~COURT STREET GROCERS CHEF EXPANDS TO RED HOOK: A friendly face at Court Street Grocers, Chef Mary Ellen Amato, recently spread her culinary charm to Red Hook for a cafe solo project. Her new restaurant, Rita, is currently serving breakfast and lunch at 293 Van Brunt St. near Pioneer Street. With 25 seats inside and soon to be 25 outside, Amato is focusing on a light daytime menu with Spanish influences, with expectations to stay open all day in the future. Red Hook’s “small town feel” and Amato’s love for cafes in Spain drew her to opening her new endeavor. Eventually, Rita will offer seafood dishes and natural wines when it extends its hours and obtains a liquor license. “It’s a gathering place to an extent,” Amato says. “We’re kind of in the heart of Red Hook. Just being a place that’s open and available to everyone is important to me.” (via Eater New York)
 
~BROOKLYN HAS MOST CAR BREAK-INS CITYWIDE: A new study by parking app SpotAngels showed that Brooklyn saw the most car break-inscitywide last year with 6,264 reported break-ins. Of its many neighborhoods,Prospect-Lefferts Gardens turned out to be the riskiest area with 130 break-ins. In second and third were East New York and Cypress Hills, respectively, two neighborhoods where the median income is roughly $10,000 lower than Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. In a similar trend, the hip Williamsburg ranked No. 6 above neighborhoods like Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights andBrownsville. “Some neighborhoods that we think are safe because of maybe higher rent, or (where) people don’t talk about the risks, usually rank worse than other neighborhoods that we think are not safe,” said SpotAngels CEOAboud Jardaneh. (via Patch)

 EAGLE SPORTS: Anders Lee intimated during Tuesday’s morning skate that the Islanders were entering a crucial set of games and had little margin for error if they hoped to return to the playoffs this year after missing out by a single point a season ago. “Three huge divisional games and one where we can kind of put our foot down and start to put things together a little bit here and put our stamp into the playoffs here and there’s a lot of games left,” Lee said before the Islanders’ showdown with Columbus. “But this is an extremely important week and it can really set us up well for the rest of the year.” Lee picked up an assist on team captain John Tavares’ first-period goal, but that was about as good as it got for the steadily sinking Isles, who slipped even further back in the Eastern Conference postseason race with a stinker of a 4-1 loss to the Blue Jackets in front of 10,232 disgruntled customers in Downtown Brooklyn. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
