Community Board 2’s Land Use Committee voted overwhelmingly Thursday night to reject Alloy Development’s plan for the 80 Flatbush high-rise development, which would occupy an entire block at the nexus of Downtown, Boerum Hill and Fort Greene and block views of the Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower. Of the 11 committee members, 10 voted against the plan and one abstained, according to Brownstoner. Two members interviewed by Brownstoner afterward said they felt the development was actually in Boerum Hill, not the Downtown Brooklyn Special Zoning District, where the Environmental Impact Statement places it. The vote was part of the city’s Uniform Land Use Review Process, or ULURP. Community board votes are advisory under ULURP, and the proposal will next be heard at a public hearing sponsored by the Borough President’s Office on April 30, Brownstoner said.

Anti-rat plan for NYCHA targets Bushwick, Bed-Stuy

Mayor Bill de Blasio on Tuesday announced a campaign of aggressive rat extermination at 10 infested NYCHA developments, including Hylan and Bushwick Houses in Bushwick and Marcy Houses in Bedford-Stuyvesant. “We want to make the greatest city on earth the worst place in the world to be a rat,” de Blasio said, according to Bklyner. The multifaceted approach will include plugging rat burrows with dry ice, new trash bins that are more difficult for rats to penetrate and concrete “rat slabs” to seal off basements, Bklyner reported. In addition, each development will get its own full-time exterminator rather than having to rely on exterminators who rotate through the city’s NYCHA projects.

Teens march on Brooklyn Bridge against gun violence, sex harassment

Hundreds of teens marched across the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday to support the March for Our Lives, #MeToo and #TimesUp movements against gun violence and sexual harassment, according to the Brooklyn Paper. The young people gathered at Cadman Plaza, then proceeded across the bridge. Some held hands while others displayed banners with messages such as “Don’t suffer in silence.” “If we don’t back our youth, what is our future going to look like?” one marcher, Bed-Stuy resident Alton Cumbo, asked the Brooklyn Paper.
