~WILLIAMSBURG VINTAGE BOUTIQUE BECOMES BATTLEGROUND OVER RACIAL PROFILING: More than 50 people protested in front of a vintage boutique shop in Williamsburg on Friday night, one week after a black customer and her daughter were allegedly racially profiled, wrongly accused of shoplifting, chased down the street and handcuffed before police realized they were guilty of no crime. Chanting “Racial profiling has got to go!” and “White lies cost Black lives!” in front of Amarcord on Bedford Avenue, protesters promised a boycott of the shop. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~WHAT CAN YOU GET, AND HOW MUCH WILL IT COST YOU, IN SUNSET PARK?: Sunset Park has slowly been gentrifying — even before the hipster foodie destination and bespoke manufacturing center Industry City arrived. Back in the first quarter of 2013, the median sale price of a 1- to 4-family house was $685,000. In the first quarter of this year, it was $1.2 million. The waterfront neighborhood’s housing stock includes landmark-worthy century-old brownstones primarily located between Fourth and Fifth avenues and 43rd and 59th streets. ~CYNTHIA NIXON CATCHES CRITICISM FROM BOTH PARTIES DURING BAY RIDGE VISIT: Welcome to Brooklyn, Cynthia. Insurgent Democratic gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon was buffeted from the left and the right during a visit to Bay Ridge’s Bridgeview Diner on Thursday night, with one attendee challenging her racial views, while a half-dozen people in red “Make America Great Hats” protested her liberal beliefs outside. Several dozen members of the Bay Ridge Democrats club came to take the measure of the former “Sex and the City” star who is now challenging Gov. Andrew Cuomofor the Democratic nomination. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~OUTGOING BROOKLYN CHAMBER PRESIDENT ANDREW HOAN LOOKS BACK AT HIS ACHIEVEMENTS: Chamber of Commerce President Andrew Hoan ended his two-year term in classic Brooklyn style Thursday with a stop at the North Brooklyn Chamber’s venerable Greenpoint Trailer — where he received a bottle of Brooklyn Winery Merlot from North Brooklyn Chamber President Paul Samulski. It was a short tenure running the state’s largest chamber, but Hoan said his greatest legacy would be his role in creating Brooklyn Alliance Capital, which makes micro-loans with a focus on marginalized entrepreneurs such as women, people of color and immigrants.(via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~ARREST OF SHOMRIM PRESIDENT LATEST IN STRING OF BRUSHES WITH LAW: The rape arrest of the leader of the Shomrim Safety Patrol is just the latest incident in which members of the politically connected volunteer watchdog group have been in trouble with the law. Jacob Daskal, 59, president of Borough Park Shomrim, was taken into custody Thursdayafternoon at his 46th Street home and charged with raping a 16-year-old girl on several occasions between August and November of 2017. Daskal is facing more than 10 years in jail on the multi-count indictment. (via Brooklyn Eagle)
 
~BROOKLYN BRANCH OF FAMED GUYANESE EATERY TO OPEN: A well-known guyanese restaurateur is opening the first U.S. outpost of his famed Georgetown, Guyana, restaurant, German’s Soup, in East Flatbush this week. The soups are based on the original recipes of owner Clinton Urling’sfather Hubert “German” Urling. The signature dish is cow-heel soup. Also on the menu are pepperpot stew, barbecued chicken and cookup rice. (via Grub Street)
