The Rundown

~JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES’ DUMBO HOTEL WILL BECOME LOW-INCOME HOUSING, SOURCES SAY: Now we know what comes next for the DUMBOresidential hotel the Jehovah’s Witnesses owned until recently. A housing provider called Breaking Ground will turn 90 Sands St. into an affordable and supportive residence for low-income working families and low-income and formerly homeless individuals. At a CB2 meeting tomorrow, Breaking Ground President and CEO Brenda Rosen is scheduled to make a presentation about her organization’s plan “to create low-to-moderate income and supportive housing at 90 Sands St.” (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~BROOKLYN COASTAL NEIGHBORHOODS FACE BIWEEKLY FLOODING IN DECADES TO COME: The Union of Concerned Scientists released a reporton Monday warning that hundreds of thousands of coastal properties, including 24,286 in Brooklyn, face “chronic inundation” in the coming decades because of accelerating sea level rise. The southern end of Brooklyn will be hardest hit. In a worst-case scenario, 7,966 currently-existing homes in Sheepshead Bayalone will be swamped on a regular basis by the year 2100 if something isn’t done about the climate. At the other end of the spectrum, just one home is at risk in ZIP code 11211, which includes Williamsburg(via Brooklyn Eagle)

~MERMAID PARADE CELEBRATES 36TH YEAR IN CONEY ISLAND: Hundreds of thousands of people lined Surf Avenue in Coney Island on Saturday for the 36th annual Mermaid Parade that drew out waves of mermaids and other seafaring creatures in a summer celebration. Considered the largest art parade in the country, the summer kick off featured pounds of glitter, body paint and unique costumes strutted in front of yelling crowds. This year’s Mermaid Queen was singer Amanda Palmer with her husband Neil Gaiman donning the crown of King Neptune. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~DYKER HEIGHTS RESIDENTS PLEAD FOR A QUIET FOURTH OF JULY: The sounds of explosions fill the air in Dyker Heights every Fourth of July, according to neighborhood residents who said the holiday has become a noisy nuisance in recent years due to the large amounts of fireworks people shoot off. The issue of pyrotechnics and what to do about them was a topic of discussion at Dyker Heights Civic Association meeting last week, where residents asked Capt. Robert Conwell, the commanding officer of the 68th Police Precinct, to hunt down people illegally shooting fireworks. (via Brooklyn Eagle)

~CONEY ISLAND’S SHORE THEATER TO BECOME 7-STORY HOTEL: Coney Island’s landmarked Shore Theater is set to become a seven-story hotel, according to plans filed with the Department of Buildings on Wednesday. The structure, located at 1301 Surf Ave., will span 70,270 square feet. The number of rooms in the hotel that will be available is unclear. PYE Properties, owned by Pyotr Yadgarov, bought the historical theatre in December 2015. The company declined to comment on the project, saying it was still in the extremely preliminary stages of development. (The Real Deal via Brooklyn Eagle)

~JUSTIN BIEBER AND HAILEY BALDWIN CAUGHT MAKING OUT IN DOMINO PARK: Singer Justin Bieber and supermodel Hailey Baldwin were seen strolling and kissing in Williamsburg’s new Domino Park. The reunited couple dated for a brief time in 2015 and apparently found the recently opened Domino Park to be the perfect spot to demonstrate their newfound love. The six-acre waterfront area opened on June 10. They were later seen crossing over into Manhattan and smooching some more at Rockefeller Park. (TMZ via Brooklyn Eagle)

~LOOKING FOR A JOB? GO TO BROOKLYN: Brooklyn’s job market isgrowing faster than the state’s and the nation’s, according to the State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. “It’s an exciting time for Brooklyn with record employment, business growth, and a budding tech sector,” DiNapoli said last week at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The private sector has added 172,600 jobs since 2009 and grew by 4.4 percent in the past year alone, DiNapoli said. Health care jobs make up about a quarter of that growth, followed by retail.(New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)

~NYCHA WAREHOUSE RAIDED BY FEDS, RECORDS SEIZED: Federal and local investigators raided a NYCHA warehouse last week and seized records. Among the items seized were computers that contained documents about asbestos and lead paint inspections. The raid was part of a criminal probe into the city agency and followed a lawsuit filed by Manhattan U.S. AttorneyGeoffrey Berman last week. The lawsuit accused the agency of not conducting lead inspections and lying to federal inspectors about it. It also said that they plotted to hide the generally derelict conditions of the city’s public housing complexes from the inspectors. (New York Post via Brooklyn Eagle)
