Kyle Wilson started his first game for the Brooklyn Cyclones on Wednesday night in what turned out to be a thrilling extra-inning game against the Hudson Valley Renegades at MCU Park in Coney Island.

This was Wilson’s first Class A short-season outing, after he plied his trade at the Rookie Level with the GCL Mets last season following his selection as the Mets’ 35th-round draft pick in 2017.

In his New York-Penn League debut, Wilson pitched the first 3 2/3 innings, surrendering four runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts while throwing 53 of his 81 pitches for strikes.

Despite the rough outing, which led to a no decision in the Cyclones’ eventual 8-7, 10-inning loss to the visiting Renegades, Wilson certainly enjoyed his first taste of Brooklyn baseball.

“It was unreal, great atmosphere. It was a lot of fun being up here playing the game I love,” said the 21-year-old right-hander from Raymore, Missouri.

He was also aware that he was going to face a strong team.

“I knew they were gonna come in prepared to hit my fastball and that’s what they did,” he noted. “They were very aggressive, that’s what good teams will do, they’ll spit on pitches and wait for the pitch to hit.”

Wilson said he needs to learn to locate a little better, know which pitch to throw and how to execute better.

When asked about the camaraderie around the locker room, Wilson said the team has a lot of good characters, from the usual jokesters to people who want to win.

Wilson admitted that the music in the locker room is dominated by his Puerto Rican and Dominican teammates.

“They play their dance music, and we don’t understand it, but it’s fun,” Wilson grinned, “Once in a while, we get to change the music up a bit, mix in the midwestern and country a little, ya know?”

Wilson said he is looking forward to see what this team can do and hopefully have some fun along the way.
